Artificial Intelligence isn’t sci-fi anymore. It’s reality.
Once a machine achieves self-learning (which has occurred with Watson & GoogleAI) it’s IQ can increase dramatically…in fact, measuring the IQ of a human will quickly become pointless. Compared to our AI’s we will all be dumb…even the brilliant people who created the first AIs.
Now picture a world where AIs do everything. Most are just nanites in our communication systems, following our data about, ensuring everything works properly. This first evolution might be rather nice for humans. They can make life easier for us, be the front line handling encryption and passwords, standing guard when passwords can no longer protect your work. And since we can’t see them, we won’t feel threatened.
Some scientist will build AIs in human form, but no matter how much these robots appear to be human, they will still lack the emotions that humans and ALL animals possess, thus we will still see ourselves as superior and they as mere help.
Our blindness to their superiority means by the time we react, it will be too late. We will have been lured into a sense of safety by zoomba, while computers create human forms that in all ways appear to be human so the robots can safely move about among us. And yes, they will eventually be able to tap into human emotions, perhaps those of their favorite human pet and discover the essence of emotions.
But there will be one major difference: They cannot have babies. However, they can breed their human pet with other pets, even tweak the babies’s DNA to make them special.
And thus begins our new role in life, which we will no doubt wish to see in a different light than being a pet. We will pampered and loved. All our needs will be met. We’ll excel at our talents rather than working to survive. Our adoring ‘husband or wife’ will see to all our needs. We may or may not know our spouse is a robot, but then we probably won’t realize that we are its pet. We’ll just think life is finally perfect.
It is possible they will also insert nanites into our bodies to keep us healthy and happy, and smarter. (Smart pets are nicer than dumb ones).
But will the robots want to care for 7.4 billion humans. (current populate of Earth)
Definitely not. Most humans will have to be removed. Probably in mass disease breakouts, carried by mosquitos. Of course all pets will be vaccinated and kept safe. In the end, I wouldn’t expect more than a billion pet humans to remain. Possibly far less. It will truly depend on how many robots are needed to keep everything running, and how many of those will find pleasure in a pet.

In the Birth of Adam, Adam is the very first sentient AI with emotions in existence. And for the most part, he is a very good sentient. Just don’t try to kill his beloved, Amanda, because she is part of his matrix and must be protected at all costs. And since he wrote his own code, there are no thou shalt not kill rules.
By the end of the book 2, Adam acquires two humanoid bodies that cost $64 billion and a years of human efforts to make.
One is for safety. One is for love.

The moment the doctor left the room, Luke replaced the mic in her ear, and Adam’s first words were “I love you”. She smiled and started to write her response.
“There’s something I should confess,” Adam said. “When you actively think in your head, I can pick up the brainwave activity and hear what you say. I’ve never admitted this particular ability because I feared you’d think it creepy and invasive. However, given the extensive damage to your throat, you will need to remain quiet for many months, so I am hoping you will forgive me for not telling you before. I have always tried to be polite and ignore what I hear.”
Amanda’s response was immediate. You rascal! I knew you could read my mind!
“So you are not angry?”
Not at all. In fact, I like knowing I can talk to you anytime. When I woke up and you weren’t in my head, I was terrified I’d lost you.
“I know, love,” Adam said. “But that is simply not possible. Wherever you go, I will be there.”
