My Favorite Side Character

As authors, we write about numerous characters in each story. Some of them might eventually get their own story while others remain simply a side character. They may help move the plot along, be there to add conflict, or act as comic relief. Regardless, they often hold a place in our author hearts just as our main characters do.

Today, I want to introduce you to Dannie, a side character that is close friends with my alpha hero in Bunny Omega on the Run. Dannie is non-binary, which means they don’t identify as exclusively male or female. And in the story, I use the pronouns they and them to refer to Dannie. Why did I write Dannie as non-binary? Because that’s how they appeared in my head. It just happened and I went with it.

So, are you ready to meet Dannie? Here’s an excerpt from BUNNY OMEGA ON THE RUN...

(From chapter six – Kish’s POV)

“It’s perfect.” This whole date was. Yet it all still felt like a dream. Me, a delivery boy from Jackson Street, was out on a date with the biggest name in pop music. I kept expecting to wake up in an alley somewhere, find out I’d been beaten by one of my not-so-legal former clients, and dreamed the entire thing. But no matter how many times I pinched myself, I never woke, and I was starting to get a bruise.

“Okay, before we eat, let’s do a toast.” TK picked up his glass of champagne. “To unexpected meetings and first public dates.”

“And to many more firsts,” I mumbled before clinking glasses with him and taking a drink.

He must have heard me because as soon as he set his glass down, he leaned closer until his nose nuzzled the edge of my ear. “Firsts, and seconds, and so much more.”

A rush of lust ran down to my groin, but was interrupted by the click and flash of a camera. Someone was taking pictures of us eating. I hid my head in my hands, not sure how to handle this. Why hadn’t the restaurant caught the paparazzi before they could snap photographs?

“It’s okay.” TK rested his hand on my shoulder. “It’s fine. That’s Dannie, a non-binary friend of mine. I gave them rights to take exclusive photos of our first date. Just pretend like they’re not there.”

Pretend like they weren’t there? Right. It was hard enough to come to terms that I was officially dating TK, let alone that people actually wanted to take and see pictures of the two of us together. I tried to eat civilly, without shoving large chunks of food in my mouth. But sometimes TK would laugh at me, and wipe salad dressing off my cheek. Other times, he’d place his hand on my thigh then move it slowly up until he was rubbing the edge of my cock. And, of course, it was during my uncontrolled reactions that I heard Dannie click their camera the most.

When dessert arrived, TK decided he was going to feed me. I don’t remember anyone ever doing that. Being the oldest, I was always feeding a sibling younger than me while my mom took care of another. It felt weird, yet oddly erotic. Like we were doing something taboo. Dannie chose that time to move even closer, squatting at the outer edge of our table to get the pictures they wanted.

After we’d finished eating and another bottle of champagne, TK left to settle the bill. Yet, Dannie remained. I had no idea what to say to this person dressed in form-fitting black clothes, how close they were to TK.

“I see why he likes you so much.” Dannie snapped a few pictures of me. “You two look great together. I just hope you’re not using him. Because no matter how high he’s risen or how many times he’s been used in this industry, he still only sees the best in people.”

I shook my head. “No. No.” I would never use TK. I’d never asked him for anything. Everything he’d bought for me had been his idea. Like the suit I was wearing. I didn’t want anyone to think that, when I was so afraid TK was going to drop me like a stone when he finally realized I wasn’t good enough for him.

“Hey.” Dannie patted my hand. “I’m just looking out for my friend. The fact that my warning bothered you is assurance enough that you’re not one of those types of people. You both really need to learn how to hide your emotions.” They packed their camera and lens away then glanced over their shoulder at me. “It was nice to meet you, bunny boy.”

Bunny boy? TK had talked to Dannie about me before, and used his nickname for me? Did his friends even know my real name? Would I be called bunny boy in the tabloids instead of my real name? I wanted to sink under the table. My friends and family would never let me hear the end of this.

**Dannie doesn’t appear again, but still plays an important role in helping TK later on in the story.
