Scavenger Falters by Liza O'Connor

Can you really die of a broken heart?
Yes, you actually can. When you feel the physical ache within the left cavity of your chest, you could be experiencing a life-threatening condition — broken heart syndrome. Yep, that’s what they named it.

The blood pumping in and out of your heart becomes temporarily disrupted by a surge of stress hormones, which are secreted in response to high emotions. These can be either good or bad emotions, but it happens more often with bad news. The resulting contraction in your heart can kill you.

Scavenger Falters

Liza O’Connor

Alisha Kane, the Corps’ best flyer, is promoted to colonel, in charge of teaching the Corp’s SkyRyders her extraordinary flying maneuvers. The man she loves, Logan, continues to place the Corps first and insists they both remain focused on their work. For Alisha, this means ferreting out the best flyers in a Corps that has systematically forced great flyers into mediocrity. Logan focuses on learning Alisha’s flying techniques so that he can become the hero the East Coast desperately needs. The result includes fractured ribs and broken hearts, but through it all they never relinquish their love of the Corps.

EXCERPT
Logan gathered her in his arms, and it felt so good, so warm and safe. Yet, she knew it was all a lie. There was no warmth or safety within his arms, because he was too damned stubborn to admit the love between them was right.
“Hush,” he soothed. “You don’t want to upset your gramps now.”
“Don’t even try to distract me with Gramps. If he knew why I was crying, he’d kick your butt.”
“You’re probably right there,” Logan admitted. “As much as your grandfather and I like each other, he knows I’m too old for you.”
She struck his chest with her fist. “Stop saying that!” she demanded. “You’re not too old! And I’m not as young as I look. And our ages don’t matter. We love each other and that’s all that matters.” So she was twenty-one and he fortysomething. Who cared in a world where neither of them were likely to live for long?
Colonel Logan captured her hand in his and turned her so she faced him. “It isn’t even close to all that matters. It doesn’t even make the top five priorities.”
“Name one thing more important!” she demanded.
“Your career in the Corps.”
“I don’t care about my career…”
“Then you’re a fool. You have a rare ability to make real changes and contributions to the Corps. Look at your first two battles. Without you, hundreds of Ryders would have died. Ginnie, Jersey, and Philly—all dead if you hadn’t been there. And don’t say anyone could have stepped up to the challenge, because you know that’s not true. At this point in time, there’s only you, and until your techniques can be taught and transferred to other Ryders, there is nothing more important than your contributions to the Corps.”
Alisha wanted to tell him he was wrong, but how could she? She’d only convince him she was a petulant child. Would she really place her own happiness over the lives of hundreds of Ryders? A part of her wanted to do just that, and her selfishness shamed her to the core. She never hesitated to risk her life for the Corps—why was this sacrifice so much harder?
Because when you’re dead, the pain stops. Living without Logan will be a never-ending agony.
She pushed away the thought and sighed heavily. “All right, I’ll concede that my contributions to the Corps should take precedence right now, but can’t I have both? Is there some law that says I must be unloved while I save the world?”
Colonel Logan gave her a sad, gentle smile and stroked her face. “You’ll never be unloved, Alisha. Everyone who meets you will love you. And someday, when you can risk a few distractions in your life, you’ll meet some young man and fall in love again.”
“I will not,” she replied, her voice quivering with emotion. “I will never love anyone but you.”
“You think that now, but trust me, time will heal.”
Alisha couldn’t listen to any more of this. He had made it clear that nothing had changed. He refused to see there might be a compromise, a way she could contribute to the Corps and be happy at the same time. However, to listen to him demean the intensity and durability of her love for him: that was more than she could bear! She ran from his room and down the hall.
Her heart ached with a paralyzing intensity as she entered her bedroom and leaned against the door. Her heart hurt so much, she truly couldn’t breathe. She slid to the floor as gray dots appeared in her vision. Her last thought before blacking out was: So you really can die of a broken heart…

Rishallt by Aurora Springer

RISHALT, Taxyon Space, Book 2
 - SciFi Adventure & Romance

Two alien worlds. Two lovers torn apart. Twist the hyperthreads into unity.

Kiron Arqin Ramis is summoned home by his family to the unwanted honor of a new triad and union with a high-ranked female. Unable to forget Nikki, he endures a perilous exile on a wilderness planet instead of complying with his family’s demands. But, the Triarchs have other plans for him.

Stakes are higher than the lives of two individuals. Earth leaders are desperate to acquire the alien interstellar technology, while Warrish dispute the advantage of an alliance with inferiors. Can Nikki and Kiron pierce the barriers separating them to find happiness with provoking an unequal war?

Excerpt

With Nikki following, Kiron dove into deeper water, and descended to the seabed. Soon he spotted a cluster of the flower-like triales and beckoned to Nikki. They landed on the sandy bottom.

“Lovely,” she mouthed, gazing at the triales swaying in the current. Each one had a long stalk topped by three oval petals in pastel hues of pale azure, rose pink, or primrose yellow. Feeder filaments wriggled in the center of the imitation flower.

Joy thrilled into him, noting her graceful figure and intent focus on the animal flowers. She was lovely. Standing behind her, he leaned over to breathe, “beautiful,” in her ear, and bent down to nuzzle her bare neck.

She giggled and swung to face him, shaking her head in mock disapproval. Her teasing smile contradicted her admonition.
Gladly yielding to temptation, he leaned in to kiss her. Her inviting expression flipped to open-mouthed terror. A shadow moved across her pupils.

Danger!

Alarm instincts honed in battle kicked in. He shoved her away and ducked. Spinning to confront the menace, he pulled out his prodder. A giant tantra lunged at him, its orange and blue batwings angled back, and its tentacle-ringed mouth agape.

Its sticky tongue shot past his head, burning agony across the skin of his biceps. He fired into the maw. Dodging backward, he knocked against Nikki.

She stumbled aside, gripping the harpoon in both hands. He dove to catch her, grasping her shoulders and steadying her in place. She shot the bolt into the horrid maw. Recoil slammed her against his chest. Wrapping an arm around her trembling body, he aimed his prodder at their attacker. He didn’t fire. Her bolt had hit a vulnerable spot.

The tantra jerked vertical, its gullet pumping water from the wound. Its stinging feelers whipped from side to side, and its skinny tail churned loose sand into eddies.

“Good shot,” Kiron said, tugging Nikki away from the thrashing predator. His upper arm smarted from the stinging tongue of the tantra, and Nikki had not escaped its toxic touch. It had scored a red weal across her right ankle. He grasped her waist and hit his jets. They sped above the sea bottom. When the tantra had vanished from sight, he slowed and halted in the shelter of a reef.

Nikki clung to him, still panting in reaction.
He inflated the bubble tent and pulled her inside the air-filled shelter.

Plopping onto her butt, she cried, “What was that animal? My leg feels like I ran into a furnace.”

“Giant tantras patrol the deep ocean. They’re rare in such shallow water.”

Stroking her fingers down his chest, she said, “They can’t penetrate this bubble. Correct?”

He breathed, “We’re safe.” Lifting his uninjured arm, he brushed her hair and caressed her soft cheek.

“Then, kiss me.” She leaned toward him, an expectant smile on her sweet face.

Review of Rishalt,
book two of the Taxyon Space series
by Aurora Springer.
Review by CLM

When the watchers return, there is one missing: Kiron, the sentient Nikki has fallen in love with.

(Sadly, he’s been called back to his planet, where he is expected to marry into a triad marriage. That’s a marriage between three men and three woman as is the custom of his world. Only Kiron refuses, since he only wants Nikki.)

Fortunately, Nikki is selected to be one of the six earth people allowed to go to Kiron’s home planet. Sadly, that turns out to be a very dangerous honor for her. There are sentients who want Nikki to go away!

As in all of Springer’s stories, the detail is exquisite, the creatures vivid and captivating.

I thoroughly enjoyed the various sentient animals, (at least the nice ones—many were deadly) and all the intrigue and attempted murders. Also, Nikki isn’t the only strong, can do, female in this story.

Not surprisingly, I give it five stars!

Scavenger Falters by Liza O'Connor, bk2, releases

Many years ago, I began writing the SkyRyder series. That was back when I didn't publish or socialize, I just wrote novels. I did belong to a crit group (romcritters) but otherwise, it was just me and my PC.

I liked to try new things, so for the SkyRyders series, I wrote each chapter twice, allowing both my main characters to see the event from their POV. I did this for the entire book.

Needless to say, that almost crashed my PC back then and not even my sister wished to read every event twice. So I set the book aside and wrote the Adventures of Xavier & Vic, my Victorian Sleuth Series.

Then one day I returned to the SkyRyders and decided to go through the repetitive chapters and decide which character told that particular event better and I'd discard the other. It was a tedious process, but I loved the story, so I had no choice but to save it.

Once I had normalized the story with only one POV per happening, I sent it off to critters, changed matters per their excellent advice, then moved on to writing other books. (Including several more about the SkyRyders only darker and more sexual.)

That was my life for ten glorious years. I would write, hike with my dog Jess, and garden.  Those were the best years of my life and I wrote in whatever genre a story wished to unfold. That means I've written books in almost every genre imaginable.

Three years ago, I took up the gauntlet and began to seriously publish. Scavenger Falters will be my 28th novel. It is the continuance of Alisha's life in the SkyRyders Corp.  I hope you enjoy it.

Space Rep interviews Major Mac from The Vista and Bk 2:Renegades

Liza: Space Rep has been practicing his interrogation and interview techniques and wants another go at Major MacKenzie. How could I say no? It's been a year since the first interview with Vista Security's Maj. MacKenzie (see it here), so an update is in order.

SPACE REP: A lot has happened recently. Are you happy with the progress you've made, in The Vista and Cody?
Mac: Of course. It's been a long time, a lifetime for some of us. Getting out into the world has its drawbacks, but overall, it's going to be a good for us. The Vista was isolated for twenty years. The rest of the world went on. Now we're catching up.

SPACE REP: It seems that Team Three has broken up. True?
Mac: Not at all. We have jobs that have been assigned to us, and right now, that means we're in different places. I'm here in Cody, Shannon is out in Colorado, Wade is somewhere I can't disclose. Team Three is still Team Three, and in time, we'll be back together.

SPACE REP: What has surprised you the most about the new places you've been?
Mac: Nothing.

SPACE REP: Nothing has surprised you, in the past year?
Mac: All right, here's one. I was surprised at how completely Council and probably Command has lied to us about what's beyond The Vista. We should have known. The thing is, they claim they did it to protect everyone. After the past year, I understand it. I don't condone it.

SPACE REP: You've forgiven them?
Mac: Yes.

SPACE REP: What do you expect in the next year?
Mac: We're digging into some of the new places, finding out who we can trust.

SPACE REP: Being an Altered, that has to be easier for you.
Mac: You'd think that, but it's not so simple. Altered humans are not welcome in places, and rumor has it, hunted in others. Now, since there is no outstanding physical evidence to identify us, we can generally keep our mouths shut and get along with everyone.

SPACE REP: Since you're out in the world, making friends and influencing possible allies, what do you expect your biggest obstacle to be?
Mac: Vista Council. They will want answers about what we did in Colorado. Command, too. It could get ugly.

SPACE REP: Now that you're the responsible adult, the person in charge of the Cody Base, how has that changed your perception?
Mac: There's always something broken, not working right, or just plain missing. I don't like being what amounts to an administrator and I don't foresee myself there for any extended amount of time.

SPACE REP: You still won't discuss your personal life? You won't talk about Shannon?
Mac: Ask your questions.

SPACE REP: Great. Where is she?
Mac: Like I said, in Colorado.

SPACE REP: With Hunter?
Mac: Both of them are there, on separate assignments. Yes, they happen to be in the same place. No, that doesn't bother me. In the end, I don't want her to be alone. There are a lot of reasons she'd be safer and happier with Hunter, but that doesn't mean I'm out of the picture.

SPACE REP: Anything you'd like to add?
Mac: When we started this little adventure into the world outside The Vista, we were clueless. I still don't think we've done more than scratch the surface. Time will tell.

Liza: Space Rep, what a professional job you did on your interview. Well done, indeed!
SPACE REP: Thanks. S.A. Hoag helped a bit.

What happens, after the end of civilization?
The Vista:
Book 1 of The Wildblood by S. A. Hoag

New 5 Star review!
The Vista is fast paced with lots of action and suspense and covers a lot of territory in the vastness of post apocalyptic United States. S A Hoag creates characters who are not only believable and enduring but who lead and direct the narrative, carrying us along in their wake. This is dystopian fiction at its best. Looking forward to the sequel.
