Like Mary, the heroine of Liza’s awesome new release Proud Mary, Rhea, the heroine of Dark Flight, needs a rescue.

Romance writers are often told to create strong heroines, heroines who could rescue themselves. Mary and Rhea are definitely heroines like that. But even the strongest of beings require help from time to time.

In Rhea’s case, she’s injured. She’s alone on a strange planet, not knowing the customs or the geography. Humanoid Alliance baddies are after her. She has to find and protect her sister, the one being in the universe she cares about, and she’s running out of time.

Accepting help wouldn’t make her weak. It would make her smart.

Unfortunately, she has been betrayed so many times; she doesn’t recognize a legitimate offer of help when she receives it. She believes Orol, our winged hero, is working for the enemy. Rhea runs from him, forcing our warrior hero to capture and restrain her.

Heroes require help also. In Dark Flight, there are scenes in which Orol needs Rhea’s assistance. He can’t defeat his baddies on his own. She offers skillsets he doesn’t have, insights into situations he hasn’t considered.

I believe one of the things that makes a romance couple solid is how they can and will rely on each other. They are stronger together than apart. I also think it is a sign of strength for the heroine to accept help first. This is why I love both writing and reading heroine rescue romances.

I’m super excited about the release of Liza’s Scavenger’s Mission in October. Judging by the blurb, Alisha, the heroine, is strong and rebellious and extremely interesting. She reminds me a bit of Imee, my heroine in Chasing Mayhem.

Imee is a Retriever, a bounty hunter of sorts working for the cruel and controlling Humanoid Alliance. The Humanoid Alliance has captured her family. She’s forced to do their dirty work, hunting down their rebels. If she doesn’t meet her quota, her family is sent to her…in pieces.

Both heroines have high-risk jobs. Alisha, a pilot, crashes and almost dies. Imee, a Retriever, deals with dangerous beings, rebels who know if they’re caught, they’ll be killed. She has almost died many times, and when she meets the hero, Mayhem, she realizes she’s finally met a target she can’t subdue. He’s a cyborg warrior, skilled in battle. She’s human, able to fight but she doesn’t have his strength or speed.

Mayhem loves that Imee is a powerful, independent female. He admires her warrior spirit, her muscles, her skills with a dagger. She’s larger than the average human female and he loves that also. Cyborgs aren’t small males. (grins) They appreciate curvy females.

This admiration and respect doesn’t stop Mayhem from wanting to protect Imee. She’s human and can’t heal as quickly as cyborgs can. He sees her kindness, her reluctance to harm others, her yearning for love, and wants to shield her from any pain.

Strong people don’t have to be strong all the time. When they’re with beings they trust, they can let down their guards. They can lean on these other beings. They can ask for help.

The issue is… Mayhem is Imee’s target. He’s one of the rebels she is supposed to retrieve for the Humanoid Alliance. Can she trust him? Can he trust her? Without trust, can love grow?

Cynthia Sax asks What would you die for?

What would you die for?

I believe the answer to that question shows us our true priorities, what we truly think is important. I value freedom. I would fight to protect it. But if I were faced with the choice of a lifetime imprisoned or certain death, I would probably choose a lifetime imprisoned (hoping that I would find some sort of happiness with it).

In contrast, I truly would die to protect my dear wonderful hubby (though I doubt he would allow that). If the choice came down to his life or mine, I would give up my life.

I was watching the season premiere of Containment. In this TV show, a section of a city is exposed to a deadly virus and blocked off.

Some loved ones are in the infected area. These people, if they stay in the infected area, will die. There’s no cure and the virus spreads quickly.

Some loved ones are in the safe area. They will hopefully live long healthy lives.

If you were in the infected area, would you try to escape, knowing you could possibly infect your loved ones and other people? If you were in the safe area, would you try to enter the infected area to be with your loved ones, knowing you will die?

Again, it comes down to… What would you die for? Would you die for your loved ones, put their lives before your life?

In Defying Death, my latest release, Death, the cyborg hero, witnesses a moment between another cyborg and his female that is so touching, so loving; Death is willing to do anything to experience something similar to it. He rebels against his cyborg brethren, dooming himself to death, to find his own female, his own moment of happiness.

Death would die for one moment of happiness, of being loved.

There are a number of ways to build a standalone series (a series with books that can be read on their own). My favorite, by far, is the sexy brother premise.

This is exactly what it sounds like. The hero of the first book in the series has two or three or four or more sexy, single brothers. In the subsequent books, these brothers find their own heroines (or heroes or heroines and heroes, depending on the stories being told – grins).

These brothers don’t have to be brothers by birth. They could be best friends, soldiers in the same unit, executives at the same company, members of a club or any other group. They have something in common and they usually have a loyalty to each other.

This loyalty is very sexy. It shows these males can form lasting relationships. They have a code of honor. They can work with others (even if they snarl and fight and otherwise misbehave). They’re willing to make sacrifices, perhaps even risk their lives, for others. All of this is Grade A hero material.

My cyborg series is built around the sexy brother premise. The heroes are all cyborgs, all warriors, all linked in their dislike for the Humanoid Alliance.

Crash And Burn, my most recent standalone story in this series, is part of a sexy brother subseries within this larger sexy brother series. Crash, the cyborg hero, is best friends with Rage and Gap. Rage’s story has already been told in Releasing Rage. Crash’s story is being told in Crash And Burn.

One of the things I love about this type of series is that we already know a bit about the new heroes. We met Crash in Releasing Rage. We know that, unlike many of his cyborg brethren, he doesn’t like fighting. We know he’s self-conscious about his ‘scary’ eyes.

In Crash And Burn, we’ll learn much more about him. We’ll also see Rage, the hero of Releasing Rage, and Gap, the still single ‘brother’, through Crash’s eyes. We’ll learn more about Rage and Gap also. This makes the stories even fuller.

Endings & New Beginnings by Cynthia Sax

As Liza has wrapped up her delicious Multiverses series with the last story, Surviving Sojourn, and is all set to write a new yet related spinoff series, The Search for Sentients, I thought this would be a great time to talk about endings and new beginnings.

Putting on my reader hat, I’m always torn when a series I love ends. On one hand, I know I’ll miss the characters and the world the writer created. I’m also a bit worried that I won’t love the next series as much as I love the current one. On the other hand, the next series could be even better! Writers normally refine their craft with every story they write, every series they plot. The odds that the next series will be even more terrific is pretty darn good.

In Liza’s case, she’s already given us a hint that her next series will be awesome. We know that characters will be searching for sentients. Sentients, not merely humans. I’m super excited to read about the different species the characters will discover, what they’ll look like, their abilities, their goals.

Releasing Rage, my cyborg romance, is the first story in a thrilling new series for me. This dark, sexy, and very intense series explores the world of cyborgs, warriors who are half man and half machine. All stories will be standalones (they can be read on their own or out of order). They will each have a romance happy ever after for the couple featured in the story. But, of course, there will be things in subsequent stories that only readers of the previous stories will know. (grins) I’m tricksy that way.

How many stories will be in the Cyborg series? I don’t yet know. Often I’ll have a set number. In my Warlords series, I knew I’d have four stories (well, at first, I thought I would have three but then the villain wanted his story told). With Cyborgs, I know I’ll have at least five stories. Judging on the abundance of different cyborgs existing, every model having different challenges and different strengths, I can’t foresee running out of fresh, exciting stories any time soon. That thrills me as a writer.
