Jessica Subject shares Jager, Galactic Defenders #2

I've the fabulous Jessica E. Subject today and she wants to share her fav lines from her latest book: Jager. Now normally, you'd expected 5 lines, or 10 lines, but Jessica often does the unexpected. That's why her books are so fun. So today we get 8 favorite lines from her latest book.
(that is if you can peel your eyeballs off the naked body above...)

Favorite lines from JAGER by Jessica E. Subject

I thought I’d share some of my favorite lines from my new release without giving too much away. Enjoy!

1) This snippet is from the beginning of the story when Delta squad is training.

A twig snapped behind him. Jager twisted around and raised his plazer, ready to shoot. Instead of their enemy ready to attack, he found Katrina, who had already downed the Erebus with just her blade.

2) In this snippet, Jager is trying hard to deny he has feelings for Katrina.

No. He didn’t like Katrina. He didn’t like her fraternizing with Jace, the only Mingot he knew with hair. Perfect hair some Defenders swooned over. And he definitely didn’t like what the guy did with Katrina behind closed doors. Naf and Oflan could shove it up their asses if they believed him to be jealous of the other Defender. Because he wasn’t. Jace belonged to a different squad, and Jager wanted to keep his own squad focused without having to deal with the drama of relationships. Maybe if Katrina hung around with her own squad, they could work well together for a change.

3) In this snippet, Katrina is angry she will not be with Delta squad on their first mission.

Didn’t anyone understand the danger they were putting Delta squad in? They were already cursed by the squad’s name, Jager having been the only survivor after a mission to Hoggins where Bryce had saved his ass. And she was just starting to like that ass, too. Even though the person attached could be a pigheaded a**hole sometimes.

4)  In this snippet, Jager is on his way to Earth and learns some interesting information.

Bryce leaned forward and stared into the screen. “You can tell me where my daughter is, to start.”

5) Katrina is on Earth, and has just killed a bunch of Erebus by herself, but she expects more.

“Is that all you got?” she yelled, hoping to attract the rest and end them quickly. There had to be more. The Galactic Alliance wouldn’t send three squads to deal with such a small Erebus threat.

6) Jager is on Earth, trying to find Katrina, and learns that Katrina’s parents didn’t want her to become a Defender.

The queen of Hemera wasn’t proud her daughter served the Alliance? On Kalara, children didn’t have a choice. If they didn’t become a Defender, they had to work for the training facility, making and serving food, and cleaning up after the trainers and trainees. Otherwise, they were shunned, kicked off the planet with no contact or aid from either parent. Though he didn’t have a parent to make proud, his mother having died delivering him. The identity of his father disappeared when her heart stopped.

7) Jager has been captured by a new enemy on Earth, while searching for Katrina, and comes across a body...

A clay-brown hand yanked the blanket, exposing adult-sized yet dainty feet at the other end. Female, for sure. Bipedal, like all the intelligent beings he knew. Perhaps the woman who’d brought him here. Though, why would she lock herself up with him?

He shifted even closer. Kneeling beside the figure, he dared a peek under the blanket. Dark hair, almost as dark as the night. When he peeled the covering farther off, he noticed birthmarks on the woman’s shoulders and down her spine, mocha brown spots coming together at a point in the middle of her back. It was Katrina. “Should’ve known.”

8) Jager is frustrated beyond belief with Katrina. Then this happens...

A scream pierced his eardrums. “Katrina?” What had happened to her? Cosmos, so much for working as a team. He should have been by her side instead of at the opposite end of their cell. Whatever happened to her, it was his fault. He crawled forward, dreading what he’d find when he reached her.

BLURB:

Jager's new squad of Defenders has completed training, but the spoiled princess who has grated on his nerves since her first day of training is called back to Hemera for a yearly celebration. When Princess Katrina doesn't show up, Jager must find her and drag her home, where he wishes she would stay.

Katrina is a Defender, not a princess. And there is no way she wants to return to a planet she hates for some stupid ceremony. Not when she could be out killing Erebus with her squad.

But when a new enemy threatens both their lives, they must work together to survive.

EXCERPT

Katrina ducked down a dark narrow alleyway that led to a parking lot. Across the street was the middle school she’d attended. No playground equipment on the schoolyard, but she’d played tetherball and basketball on the asphalt. Behind the school lay the factory where the Erebus had attacked a human and left its slimy, stenchy trail. Though the attack had happened on the planet a couple weeks prior to their arrival, the Erebus wouldn’t have strayed far. They never did. She was surprised there hadn’t been more attacks, especially at the school.

She sneaked toward a dark corner of the property where many intermodal containers sat, the area blocked from the sun by a recent addition to the building. As she inched closer, her nostrils picked up the stronger, more recent stink, making her eyes water. No matter how many times she fought an Erebus, real or holographic, she never became accustomed to the sinus-burning odor of them. There was definitely one nearby.

A sharp call pierced the silence, reminding her of the sound computer-generated raptors made in the movies she’d watched as a child. She froze. If one Erebus called out to others, she wouldn’t be alone for long. Reaching down, she lifted her pant leg and pulled her zuranium blade—a family heirloom—from her boot. No matter how many came at her, none of them would survive the attack.

With a roar, an Erebus burst into the open from behind one of the containers. It lumbered toward her, red, glaring eyes focused on her. She returned its stare, muscles tense and ready to react. Before the creature reached her, she charged, holding up her blade, striking it right through the twisted vines covering its trunk. It fell back, taking her down with it and bounced when it hit the ground. Katrina pushed off the creature so not to get further tangled in its limbs. This one had thicker and fewer limbs than any Erebus she’d fought before, but she didn’t have time to contemplate the difference. Another struck, knocking her to the ground with one of huge limbs. How had it snuck up on her? She jumped to her feet, looking for an opening to jab the Erebus.

The creature kept waving its tentacles in front of its body, giving her no chance to strike. So, she pivoted behind it, catching the Erebus off guard, and ramming the blade into its back. Two down. How many more waited around the corner? And why were they keeping to the shadows? Erebus loved the sunlight, needed it to survive.

Two came at her from behind. They moved faster, struck her at the same time. She flew forward, skidding across the asphalt. The blade slipped from her hand, spinning as it sailed out of reach. She jumped to her feet, ignoring the sting of her scraped hands, and lunged to grab the blade. She leaped and spun around, slamming the blade into the closest Erebus. It hadn’t even hit the ground when she ducked away from its flailing tentacles and killed its friend. She leapfrogged the creatures to avoid getting tangled up in them. This new generation may be faster than the others, but they were dumb, hadn’t given her much of a fight.

“Is that all you got?” she yelled, hoping to attract the rest and end them quickly. There had to be more. The Galactic Alliance wouldn’t send three squads to deal with such a small Erebus threat.

“Hello?”

Katrina spun at the unfamiliar female voice. The last thing she needed was a Terran hanging out where the Erebus lurked. Great! She’d used the word Terran again. She hid the blade behind her, sticking it in her back pocket. “Um, hi. Can I help you?”

Jessica Subject shares lots of giveaways, fav lines, and her new book Bryce.

Today, I've got the fabulous Jessica Subject over sharing gifts and her favorite lines, or so she was led to believe. I intend to peruse all her favs and pick MY favorites, making them
"Liza's pick of the bestest."

So with no further slaughtering of the English Language, let's get started:

LIZA'S TOP FIVE LINES FROM BYRCE

#1
“You may be responsible for sending them to Niesgoo, but you’re only responsible for their deaths if you leave them there to die.”

#2
And what was she supposed to have told them? You must meet with me because I’m an alien princess? No doubt the truth would have landed her in a mental institution, or worse, a lab.

#3
A little girl dashed out in front of her, jet-black curls bouncing along her shoulders. In her tattered white gown—probably a hand-me-down from an older generation—she stared up into her eyes, no reservations about approaching royalty. “Princess Lalia, where have you been? They taught us in school you were killed in the Erebus attack.”

#4
She’d heard the alien hunters used wormholes, but had never seen or traveled through one, and hoped to never again.

#5
Bryce raised his crossbow, lining his sights on the creature standing amongst the bushes, its branch-like tentacles undulating in the gentle breeze. Focusing the crosshairs on the alien’s torso, he drew in a deep breath. He had one shot.

And now for the book you've been waiting for:

BLURB:

A dedicated Defender…

Bryce fell in love once, but after Lalia was ripped away from him, he locked his heart from feeling anything for anyone else. Instead, he devotes his life to the Galactic Alliance, killing every bloodthirsty Erebus he comes across.

A shunned princess…

Lalia Comosova fell in love with the wrong man. When her parents learned of her transgressions, they sent her to Earth to hide her error in judgment from the rest of the kingdom.

A second chance?

When these lovers are reunited after many years apart, they have a chance to find happiness together. But fate steps in and threatens to rip them apart as it did years ago.

EXCERPT:

Bryce raised his crossbow, lining his sights on the creature standing amongst the bushes, its branch-like tentacles undulating in the gentle breeze. Focusing the crosshairs on the alien’s torso, he drew in a deep breath. He had one shot. If he missed, the Erebus would cry out and alert the natives of Terra to its existence, resulting in more casualties. At first glance, no one on the planet, also called Earth, would believe an Erebus anything more than an overgrown bush, but Bryce knew the truth. He’d trained to hunt the creatures from childhood.

Each step carefully placed, he advanced until he stood twenty feet from the Erebus, no chance to miss the shot. With a slight movement of his finger, he squeezed the trigger, sending a zuranium-tipped arrow racing toward the alien.

“Quinn, would you grab me another garbage bag?”

Fornax. The creature lunged toward the female voice, Bryce’s arrow stuck in one of its tentacles. A kill, but not instant.

He loaded another arrow. At the risk of being seen, he charged through the hedges. He had to cut the Erebus off before it had a chance to kill the Terran. He leaped over metal furniture and large urns, keeping his focus on the creature.

“What the hell? Get out of my yard!”

The woman rushed him, but Bryce darted around her. When the Erebus lumbered in front of him, he raised his weapon and fired. A clean shot to the middle. The creature dropped like a fallen log, crushing the furniture it landed on.

Bryce loaded the crossbow again. No time to celebrate the kill. He had to worry about the possibility of other Erebus in the area, along with the Terran woman who had seen him. Instead of running away screaming, as he’d expected her to do, she stared, wide-eyed in horror. Not at him, but the Erebus. Her body trembled as she shuffled backward, mumbling incomprehensible words.

An unexpected sense of familiarity washed over him. He couldn’t draw his attention away from her slim figure, the way her long brown hair flowed over her shoulders. Far more attractive than he’d pictured the Terrans when others talked about them. He took a closer glance. Lalia? How had she traveled so far from home without anyone knowing? She was no stranger, and definitely not Terran. Or, perhaps she was simply a doppelganger of the woman he’d once loved. He had the sudden urge to comfort her, relieve her worry. Hold her in his arms the way he had many years ago. But what if the missing princess had somehow made her way to a planet unaware life existed beyond their own? After she’d left Hemera and him behind without so much as a goodbye, he’d searched everywhere. Though not once had he thought to look on Terra.

A ground-shattering bellow pierced the night. Bryce spun around, finding himself face-to-face with another Erebus. It stared at him with beady red eyes. Thick black goop dripped from its mouth.

Bryce raised his bow, but the creature slammed him with one of its tentacles, flinging him back. The Erebus lunged at Lalia.

Rolling to his knees, Bryce aimed and fired. He hit the alien from behind, launching it forward. Onto his former lover. Slinging the bow over his shoulder, he raced toward her. The creature’s tentacles still pulsed, even though dead. Careful not to trip himself up, he shoved his hands under the creature’s torso and heaved it off her.

Lalia stood immediately and wiped the black goop from her clothes, as if she hadn’t been flattened by an alien. “They weren’t supposed to follow me. I was supposed to be safe here.”
