Jessica Subject shares Jager, Galactic Defenders #2

I've the fabulous Jessica E. Subject today and she wants to share her fav lines from her latest book: Jager. Now normally, you'd expected 5 lines, or 10 lines, but Jessica often does the unexpected. That's why her books are so fun. So today we get 8 favorite lines from her latest book.
(that is if you can peel your eyeballs off the naked body above...)

Favorite lines from JAGER by Jessica E. Subject

I thought I’d share some of my favorite lines from my new release without giving too much away. Enjoy!

1) This snippet is from the beginning of the story when Delta squad is training.

A twig snapped behind him. Jager twisted around and raised his plazer, ready to shoot. Instead of their enemy ready to attack, he found Katrina, who had already downed the Erebus with just her blade.

2) In this snippet, Jager is trying hard to deny he has feelings for Katrina.

No. He didn’t like Katrina. He didn’t like her fraternizing with Jace, the only Mingot he knew with hair. Perfect hair some Defenders swooned over. And he definitely didn’t like what the guy did with Katrina behind closed doors. Naf and Oflan could shove it up their asses if they believed him to be jealous of the other Defender. Because he wasn’t. Jace belonged to a different squad, and Jager wanted to keep his own squad focused without having to deal with the drama of relationships. Maybe if Katrina hung around with her own squad, they could work well together for a change.

3) In this snippet, Katrina is angry she will not be with Delta squad on their first mission.

Didn’t anyone understand the danger they were putting Delta squad in? They were already cursed by the squad’s name, Jager having been the only survivor after a mission to Hoggins where Bryce had saved his ass. And she was just starting to like that ass, too. Even though the person attached could be a pigheaded a**hole sometimes.

4)  In this snippet, Jager is on his way to Earth and learns some interesting information.

Bryce leaned forward and stared into the screen. “You can tell me where my daughter is, to start.”

5) Katrina is on Earth, and has just killed a bunch of Erebus by herself, but she expects more.

“Is that all you got?” she yelled, hoping to attract the rest and end them quickly. There had to be more. The Galactic Alliance wouldn’t send three squads to deal with such a small Erebus threat.

6) Jager is on Earth, trying to find Katrina, and learns that Katrina’s parents didn’t want her to become a Defender.

The queen of Hemera wasn’t proud her daughter served the Alliance? On Kalara, children didn’t have a choice. If they didn’t become a Defender, they had to work for the training facility, making and serving food, and cleaning up after the trainers and trainees. Otherwise, they were shunned, kicked off the planet with no contact or aid from either parent. Though he didn’t have a parent to make proud, his mother having died delivering him. The identity of his father disappeared when her heart stopped.

7) Jager has been captured by a new enemy on Earth, while searching for Katrina, and comes across a body...

A clay-brown hand yanked the blanket, exposing adult-sized yet dainty feet at the other end. Female, for sure. Bipedal, like all the intelligent beings he knew. Perhaps the woman who’d brought him here. Though, why would she lock herself up with him?

He shifted even closer. Kneeling beside the figure, he dared a peek under the blanket. Dark hair, almost as dark as the night. When he peeled the covering farther off, he noticed birthmarks on the woman’s shoulders and down her spine, mocha brown spots coming together at a point in the middle of her back. It was Katrina. “Should’ve known.”

8) Jager is frustrated beyond belief with Katrina. Then this happens...

A scream pierced his eardrums. “Katrina?” What had happened to her? Cosmos, so much for working as a team. He should have been by her side instead of at the opposite end of their cell. Whatever happened to her, it was his fault. He crawled forward, dreading what he’d find when he reached her.

BLURB:

Jager's new squad of Defenders has completed training, but the spoiled princess who has grated on his nerves since her first day of training is called back to Hemera for a yearly celebration. When Princess Katrina doesn't show up, Jager must find her and drag her home, where he wishes she would stay.

Katrina is a Defender, not a princess. And there is no way she wants to return to a planet she hates for some stupid ceremony. Not when she could be out killing Erebus with her squad.

But when a new enemy threatens both their lives, they must work together to survive.

EXCERPT

Katrina ducked down a dark narrow alleyway that led to a parking lot. Across the street was the middle school she’d attended. No playground equipment on the schoolyard, but she’d played tetherball and basketball on the asphalt. Behind the school lay the factory where the Erebus had attacked a human and left its slimy, stenchy trail. Though the attack had happened on the planet a couple weeks prior to their arrival, the Erebus wouldn’t have strayed far. They never did. She was surprised there hadn’t been more attacks, especially at the school.

She sneaked toward a dark corner of the property where many intermodal containers sat, the area blocked from the sun by a recent addition to the building. As she inched closer, her nostrils picked up the stronger, more recent stink, making her eyes water. No matter how many times she fought an Erebus, real or holographic, she never became accustomed to the sinus-burning odor of them. There was definitely one nearby.

A sharp call pierced the silence, reminding her of the sound computer-generated raptors made in the movies she’d watched as a child. She froze. If one Erebus called out to others, she wouldn’t be alone for long. Reaching down, she lifted her pant leg and pulled her zuranium blade—a family heirloom—from her boot. No matter how many came at her, none of them would survive the attack.

With a roar, an Erebus burst into the open from behind one of the containers. It lumbered toward her, red, glaring eyes focused on her. She returned its stare, muscles tense and ready to react. Before the creature reached her, she charged, holding up her blade, striking it right through the twisted vines covering its trunk. It fell back, taking her down with it and bounced when it hit the ground. Katrina pushed off the creature so not to get further tangled in its limbs. This one had thicker and fewer limbs than any Erebus she’d fought before, but she didn’t have time to contemplate the difference. Another struck, knocking her to the ground with one of huge limbs. How had it snuck up on her? She jumped to her feet, looking for an opening to jab the Erebus.

The creature kept waving its tentacles in front of its body, giving her no chance to strike. So, she pivoted behind it, catching the Erebus off guard, and ramming the blade into its back. Two down. How many more waited around the corner? And why were they keeping to the shadows? Erebus loved the sunlight, needed it to survive.

Two came at her from behind. They moved faster, struck her at the same time. She flew forward, skidding across the asphalt. The blade slipped from her hand, spinning as it sailed out of reach. She jumped to her feet, ignoring the sting of her scraped hands, and lunged to grab the blade. She leaped and spun around, slamming the blade into the closest Erebus. It hadn’t even hit the ground when she ducked away from its flailing tentacles and killed its friend. She leapfrogged the creatures to avoid getting tangled up in them. This new generation may be faster than the others, but they were dumb, hadn’t given her much of a fight.

“Is that all you got?” she yelled, hoping to attract the rest and end them quickly. There had to be more. The Galactic Alliance wouldn’t send three squads to deal with such a small Erebus threat.

“Hello?”

Katrina spun at the unfamiliar female voice. The last thing she needed was a Terran hanging out where the Erebus lurked. Great! She’d used the word Terran again. She hid the blade behind her, sticking it in her back pocket. “Um, hi. Can I help you?”

Jessica shares how to write short & her latest, Cosmic Desires, A Collection of sci-fi & paranormal shorts.

Writing Short

by
Jessica E. Subject

When I first started writing with the hopes of publication, I had the intention of penning long sci-fi romance novels based on a dream I had, and the internal plotting I did for months. I had six stories planned out, and wrote two of them. Due to the closing of a publisher, the first is no longer available, and the second never published, but, I believe that was for the best.

In the process of getting the first published, I was told about a sub call from Decadent Publishing. As I never thought about writing shorter stories, I wasn’t sure what to expect, so I read a couple of stories in the line to get a feel of what the publisher expected. Shortly after that, I wrote my first short story.

And, I kept writing short. I was addicted to telling a story in fewer words. One of my critique partners once told me that a short story is a moment in time, not an entire life. There is little to no back story, and only necessary scenery description. The short is about evoking an emotional response. So, I always keep these things in mind when writing short.

But, as I get ready to write longer stories again, I’ve put together a collection of my short stories, some which take place over a couple of hours, an evening, or even an entire week. They are hot, and bring together unlikely couples (and more) for some adult fun, and ultimately, a happily ever after ending.

Darryl sank into his chair, form-fitted by age. With his foot, he brushed the papers and dishes on the ottoman to the floor. He winced at the crash, but had little motivation to clean it up or do anything. Stretching out his legs, he rested them atop the cleared surface and closed his eyes. Opening them meant he would see her again, dressed in her pressed and polished uniform or with him in bed. But the memories of Beth simply messed with his head. She was gone forever. Nothing he said or did would ever bring her back.
He cringed at the abrupt stabbing pain in his chest. No one said living with a broken heart was easy. He’d known the risks of dating her, but his awareness did nothing to prepare him for the agony of losing her.
Though a military woman marrying a civilian remained a rare occurrence at Beth’s base, they’d celebrated their seventh anniversary four months ago, right before she deployed for the last time.
A knock interrupted his memories. Darryl flicked his eyes open and stared at the door. Perspiration beaded his skin. The last time someone had knocked—most rang the doorbell—bad news had followed. Two weeks ago. And he’d holed up inside ever since, only emerging for Beth’s funeral.
He set his feet on the floor before walking on wobbly legs toward the entrance. What dark tidings would he receive?
Palms slick from sweat, he turned the knob. Catching sight of the two people on his stoop, he stepped back with a startled gasp. No way the people standing in front of him existed. He had to be dreaming.
The man in full military dress gave him a quick nod. “Mr. Malloy?”
He swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. “Yes.”
“I have a delivery for you.” The man touched the woman’s back, ushering her forward. “She’s all yours. Take care of her.”
She? His? But.... Beth had died. He’d watched her body lowered into the ground, received the country’s flag. No way could his wife be standing there. “There must be some mistake. Beth died.”
Strolling down the walkway, the man paused and glanced back at him. “That’s not Sergeant Malloy. It’s her clone.”
Hardly an it. Rather a copy of his wife. Darryl griped the doorjamb. His mind spun. Human cloning had just become public knowledge. And those created remained the property of the military. “Shouldn’t she be in a lab somewhere? Or training for a mission?”

The man, at his parked Humvee, shook his head. “We had special instructions to bring her here should anything happen to the sergeant.”

Meet Second from The Gods of Probabilities by Liza O'Connor

Meet Second
Second lost use of his name, Kraton, when he became second in command of a second rate ship run by a second rate captain.

He’s been pissed from the moment the Big Boss gave him the assignment. “I know I promised you a captain’s seat and you will get it, just as soon as Zousan fails at this task. Don’t worry. You’ll be in the captain’s seat in no time at all.”

No time at all?  Kraton…scratch that…Second had been waiting over 30 billion years and despite the losers on this ship, Captain Zousan was actually succeeding at his task. Nor would Second sabotage his efforts. To be honest, he enjoyed working for Zousan far more than the Big Boss. Thus, over the last billion years, he tried to be the best Second ever, and Zousan showed real appreciation for his efforts. That had never happened with the Big Boss.

Over time, Second won his captain’s trust and his duties expanded until he basically ran the ship. No one was happier than him when they rebuilt the ship so it could carry a much larger crew.  He was well aware that the original ship had been built to fail. And while they tried to remove all the fail points when precious Athena came on board, Second never trusted they had succeeded in finding all the bugs in the software. To be certain no problems were transferred over to the new ship, the new computer was organically grown.

When he informed Zousan of the change, the captain nixed the idea, forcing Second to admit they had already built and paid for organic computer. The Big boss would have demanded it stripped out and taken the cost out of Second’s pay, but Zousan just asked for a compromise.

“Can you build a normal computer interface for me?”

Yes, he preferred Zousan a great deal over the Big Boss.

Liza interviews the book Fearless by KM Fawcett

Today, we are interviewing Fearless by K.M. Fawcett.

Space Rep: Is the book truly fearless?

Liza: It's willing to be interviewed by me, and traveling here via our shoddy transporter, so I'm thinking, YES. The book is fearless.

Space Rep: Can I test it on its fearlessness?

Liza: As long as you don't damage the book. KM will expect it returned eventually and I can promise you she loves Fearless.

Space Rep: How do you know that?

Liza: Because authors always love their books. Otherwise, they would find a different occupation, because this one is long on the hours and short on the pay. Now transport Fearless over.

Liza: Welcome, Fearless. May I call you...No, 'Fear' won't work...neither will 'Less'. How odd! Your positive name is made up of two negative words.

Fearless: That's because 2 negatives equal a positive.

Space Rep: Does that mean two bad pranks equal a good one?

Liza: Space Rep, out! Well, it seems I have no choice but to call you Fearless. No matter. Let's get to the interview while Space Rep is gone.

Liza: That's a lovely cover, but they appear more in love than being fearless.

Fearless: But it takes a fearless person to open their heart to the one they see as the enemy.

Liza: That sounds good. Tell me more!

Fearless: Myia, a shaman-in-training, wants desperately to protect her peaceful village from the barbaric Highland invaders.

Liza: Hopefully she's a fast learner because barbarian invaders aren't known for slow meandering attacks.

Fearless: True. To hone her powers of prophetic visions and healing, the village elders send Myia on a quest to heal the Highland leader's heart and stop a brewing war.

Liza: And she goes? She definitely deserves the title of Fearless. But does she have the skills to pull this off?

Fearless: Myia has mended many souls before, so this should be an effortless duty . . .until....

Liza: Oh no! Until what?

Fearless: She meets the gorgeous, stubborn Highland warlord.

Liza: You scared me to death. I feared a highlander sliced off her head or something. Of course she meets the Highland warlord. That's what she was sent to do.

Fearless: But no one mentioned how gorgeous and stubborn he was.

Liza: Well, I'm not surprised if her Shaman trainer was a guy. Men rarely refer to one another as 'gorgeous'.  However, they should have forewarned her he'd be stubborn.  So tell me more about the gorgeous warlord. Your cover has decapitated him.

Fearless: Not decapitated. Just hidden from view so readers will not swoon and faint upon sight of him.

Liza: That gorgeous, eh? Please tell me more.

Fearless: Kedric, is a former gladiator who escaped enslavement. His sole mission is to liberate the villagers from their common foe.

Liza: I hope he doesn't think Myia is his foe. Gladiators are skilled at true decapitations.

Fearless: No. The enemy is an advanced race that breeds humans for blood sport and genetic experiments.

Liza: Really not good.

Fearless: Fueled by his rage, Kedric is determined to take down the brutal enemy.

Liza: I'm glad Kedric is going to kick their butts...or more likely, decapitate their heads.  Hold on, didn't you say Myia wants to stop him?

Fearless: That is her assignment. So you can see why Kedric wants this raven-haired beauty, with a body made for sin, gone when she tries to sabotage his mission.

Liza: I notice her head is partially missing in the cover. Did he express his displeasure physically? As in, good by half of head?

Fearless: You are most bloodthirsty!  As much as Kedric might wish to be rid of Myia, no woman's touch has ever left him more annoyed . . . and aroused.

Liza: I've heard of women like that. He should stay away from her.

Fearless: He knows he should shun her soothing embrace, but he can't seem to. As their passion grows, Kedric must decide between fighting his war or surrendering his rage--and his heart--for Myia's love.

Liza: Well, this is all very well for Myia achieving her objective. But doesn't this leave an alien race making humans into lab rabbits and arena pit bulls?

Fearless: Well now, you'll have to read me to find out the answer. *sly grin*

Liza: I'm a bit concerned about my two fearless peeps. Open your covers and let me read more...please.

Fearless: Of course. Here's a fun sneak peek of the story:

Angry red streaks snaked through Kedric's aura. “What manner of trickery is this?”

“Get off of me, barbarian.” Name-calling? Really? Had her father taught her nothing?

“Barbarian? That’s funny coming from a savage.”

Myia gasped. “Savage? You’re the one on top of me.”

“As I recall, I wouldn’t be on top of you if I hadn’t needed to protect myself from your tricks.”

“I am a spiritual healer. I only wanted to repair your soul. You must release my people.”

“They’re free to go at any time. They choose to stay.”

His weight was crushing her, making breathing difficult, but she refused to let him see her discomfort. If she could calm herself enough, her spirit could reenter his, and she could try healing him again. This might be the only chance she got before he… What would he do to her?

She didn’t sense anything evil, vile, or malicious. Murder wasn’t present in his aura. The only thing she perceived was arousal. Typical male. Perhaps she could use that to her advantage.

There were three occasions when a person’s spirit was the most vulnerable: during sleep, during illness, and during sex—so she’d been told.

“You’ve invaded our peaceful village and took our people against their will. Forgive me for not believing you.” Her words were angrier than she wanted them to be. What happened to her shamanic training?

“Seems we have a lot in common, you and I.”

“We have nothing in common, barbarian.”

“Did you not invade my body against my will?”

“To heal your spirit.”

“So you say, savage.”

Would he stop calling her that? She was not a fierce, violent person. She was tranquil and at peace with the universe, dammit.

Well, at least she strove for peace.

“However,” he continued, “you needn’t concern yourself. My spirit requires no healing.”

“So say you. But our spirits have met, and yours told me it hid a deep wound. Let me back in. Let me into your body to heal you.”

His smirk surprised her. What could he possibly find so humorous?

“If anyone enters another’s body, it will be me.” His warm lips pressed against hers. As if to prove his point, his tongue coaxed hers to open for him.

She’d been kissed before, but not from a man so dangerous and commanding, or so good at it.

Well, she wasn’t about to waste the opportunity to do what she came here for, especially since nothing in his aura indicated malicious intent. His spirit simply sought to demonstrate his male dominance in a kiss. Nothing more. Ha. He’d learn who the dominant one was when she connected with his spirit again.

She opened her mouth and kissed him back. His pause indicated surprise. He’d obviously expected her to resist. When she didn’t let up, his jaw relaxed and his kiss deepened. She couldn’t deny the freedom her soul felt.

But she’d come to heal his heart, and as much as she would like to give in to the pleasure she was receiving, she needed to heal him first.

Again retreating to that tranquil place in her mind, her spirit gathered energy and flowed from her body into his. Her spirit didn’t get further than the impenetrable stone wall before it was thrown from his body again.

His lips were off hers, the weight of his body disappeared. The influx of warm night air came as a relief.

“Savage,” he boomed. “Stay out of my body.”

“If you enter my body, barbarian, rest assured I will enter yours.”
****

Liza: Oh these two fearless, determined warriors are fabulous. I'm going to take them home with me and watch the taming of...not sure which one will tame first. Can't wait to find out!

Space Rep: *drags in chains & whips* I'm back.

Liza: Where'd you get all this disturbing stuff?

Space Rep: In the lower hull of the ship. The prior owners must have left it behind.

Liza: Well, you aren't using it on Fearless. I like this book a great deal. However, if you want, I'll hang you upside down in chains and see how long it takes for your head to swell.

Space Rep: Fearless is really a good book?

Liza: Sure sounds like it.

Space Rep: Maybe we could stop by the next recycling planet and we can sell this stuff so we can buy the book.

Liza: A far better idea. Since you missed the entire interview, you may ask Fearless questions about its author.

Space Rep: Okay, I also found the links down there.  Here are the places it can be bought.

B&N

Liza: Well done! Now be nice to Fearless while I'm gone.

Space Rep: So tell me about your author, but only the interesting stuff.

Fearless: K.M. Fawcett writes sci-fi & paranormal romances and enjoys stories filled with action, adventure, and kick-butt heroes and heroines.

Space Rep: Glad Liza is buying the book. Tell me more.

Fearless: She holds the rank of Sandan (3rd degree black belt) in both Isshinryu Karate and Ryukonkai (Okinawan weapons). K.M. and her husband own Tenchi Isshinryu Karate Dojo in NJ where they teach karate, weapons, and self-defense.

Space Rep:  In New Jersey! That's where Liza lives when she's not in space.

Fearless: When not writing or working out at the dojo K.M. is driving her children to drum practice and ballet classes.

Space Rep: Your author sounds more balanced than mine. Liza is on the computer 15-18 hours a day. The only time she leaves it is to walk her dog and sleep 6-7 hours.

Fearless: My author is very busy, but she does seem to have a better balance than yours.
