Writing “What You Know” in Sci-Fi Romance

One of the most common pieces of writing advice I hear is to “Write what you know.” That means to use familiar settings, character types, and experiences. In sci-fi romance, that advice seems impossible when I’m penning tales of aliens, space travel, and serving in the Galactic Military. Some of my stories take place on Earth, but many are set on spaceships or foreign planets, places just as unfamiliar to me as Antarctica. And while I have no idea what it’s like to fly a spacecraft, fight with an evil alien, or even to find out what it’s like to learn the person I have feelings for is an alien, I do know what it’s like to fall in love in my early twenties while I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. That is generally the stage in life my characters are going through, and how I “write what I know.”

In Beyond Reach, Prince Mekai does not want marry his betrothed and flees the planet before his wedding. And Nixie has just finished learning the art of erotic massage and is taking her first clients while not sure if she made the right choice in professions. When they meet, sparks fly, but the secrets they learn about each other could destroy their lives.

Accidental Romance isn’t sci-fi, but Leanne has finished college and is getting ready to take over the family dairy farm. An accident changes her life forever, and she finds love where she least expected.

Missy and RJ have returned home for the summer after their second year of university in It Took a Zombie Apocalypse. While they’ve crushed on each other from across the driveway, their families have always stood in the way of them ever getting together. But when zombies invade their small town, they must depend on each other to survive.

It’s just days before Christmas in Hey, Santa, and Claire is dared by her best friend to ask the sexy mall Santa out so she won’t be lonely over the holidays. Little does Claire know that the man in the costume is from another planet.

So, with all these new events and people in their lives, the characters must make decisions that will be key turning points. It’s not an easy time, and can be made even more difficult while falling in love for the first time. I certainly remember those years. “Fifty dollars for a kiss.” RJ held the bill and waved it across the counter. “It goes in the jar if I get a kiss from you.”

“I’d do it for five.” She pointed to the paper sign on the jar. “But if you’re willing to donate more, go ahead.”

He walked into the booth and sat on the bench. “You misunderstand me, Missy. I don’t want a peck on the cheek. I want a real kiss, your lips on mine.”

Her cheeks reddened, making her all the more adorable, and she stepped back. “I, um.... It’s not.... I can’t.”

“It’s one kiss.” He waved the money around again, enjoying her discomfort. “The same money you’d make kissing ten old guys with beards, or ten creeps who gawk at your cleavage when you bend over to kiss them.”

The flush on her face disappeared. Maybe he shouldn’t have included that last observation.

“Hey.” He needed her attention back on him. “One kiss, and you never know, you just might like it.”

“Really?” She placed a hand on his knee then waltzed in front of him with a confidence he’d never seen from her before. “You’re that confident of the power of those full brown lips, are you?”

Before he had the chance to think of a response, she snatched the bill from his hand, leaned between his spread legs, and kissed him. He barely had a chance to close his mouth when it was all over.

“Thank you so much for your support.” Missy curtsied then stuck the money into the collection bottle.

RJ gripped the bottom of the bench, trying to process the fact the kiss had already happened. He’d hoped for so much more.

“Another.” He stood and yanked his wallet from his back pocket. “I’ll give you one hundred dollars if I can kiss you.” Yanking the bill from inside the leather fold, he held it out in front of him to prove he was good for it.

“Now, that’s against the rules.”

Her jaw shifted to the side, but when she tilted her head, he hoped she was actually considering his proposition.

RJ hopped off the bench and took a tentative step forward. He’d didn’t want her to automatically say no. “You know I’ve never played by the rules. Why would I start now?”

With a laugh, Missy playfully pushed on his chest. “You’re trouble, RJ. And you’re looking to get me into trouble with you.”

Returning to the stool, he stared into her crystal-blue eyes and smiled. She hadn’t said no. “Just a kiss.” He nodded to a patch of bushes with a bench set amongst them. “No one will see us over there.”

Writing Short

When I first started writing with the hopes of publication, I had the intention of penning long sci-fi romance novels based on a dream I had, and the internal plotting I did for months. I had six stories planned out, and wrote two of them. Due to the closing of a publisher, the first is no longer available, and the second never published, but, I believe that was for the best.

In the process of getting the first published, I was told about a sub call from Decadent Publishing. As I never thought about writing shorter stories, I wasn’t sure what to expect, so I read a couple of stories in the line to get a feel of what the publisher expected. Shortly after that, I wrote my first short story.

And, I kept writing short. I was addicted to telling a story in fewer words. One of my critique partners once told me that a short story is a moment in time, not an entire life. There is little to no back story, and only necessary scenery description. The short is about evoking an emotional response. So, I always keep these things in mind when writing short.

But, as I get ready to write longer stories again, I’ve put together a collection of my short stories, some which take place over a couple of hours, an evening, or even an entire week. They are hot, and bring together unlikely couples (and more) for some adult fun, and ultimately, a happily ever after ending.

Darryl sank into his chair, form-fitted by age. With his foot, he brushed the papers and dishes on the ottoman to the floor. He winced at the crash, but had little motivation to clean it up or do anything. Stretching out his legs, he rested them atop the cleared surface and closed his eyes. Opening them meant he would see her again, dressed in her pressed and polished uniform or with him in bed. But the memories of Beth simply messed with his head. She was gone forever. Nothing he said or did would ever bring her back.

He cringed at the abrupt stabbing pain in his chest. No one said living with a broken heart was easy. He’d known the risks of dating her, but his awareness did nothing to prepare him for the agony of losing her.

Though a military woman marrying a civilian remained a rare occurrence at Beth’s base, they’d celebrated their seventh anniversary four months ago, right before she deployed for the last time.

A knock interrupted his memories. Darryl flicked his eyes open and stared at the door. Perspiration beaded his skin. The last time someone had knocked—most rang the doorbell—bad news had followed. Two weeks ago. And he’d holed up inside ever since, only emerging for Beth’s funeral.

He set his feet on the floor before walking on wobbly legs toward the entrance. What dark tidings would he receive?

Palms slick from sweat, he turned the knob. Catching sight of the two people on his stoop, he stepped back with a startled gasp. No way the people standing in front of him existed. He had to be dreaming.

The man in full military dress gave him a quick nod. “Mr. Malloy?”

He swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. “Yes.”

“I have a delivery for you.” The man touched the woman’s back, ushering her forward. “She’s all yours. Take care of her.”

She? His? But.... Beth had died. He’d watched her body lowered into the ground, received the country’s flag. No way could his wife be standing there. “There must be some mistake. Beth died.”

Strolling down the walkway, the man paused and glanced back at him. “That’s not Sergeant Malloy. It’s her clone.”

Hardly an it. Rather a copy of his wife. Darryl griped the doorjamb. His mind spun. Human cloning had just become public knowledge. And those created remained the property of the military. “Shouldn’t she be in a lab somewhere? Or training for a mission?”

The man, at his parked Humvee, shook his head. “We had special instructions to bring her here should anything happen to the sergeant.”

I'm headed off in search of sexy Santas like the ones Jessica Subject finds. These aren't homegrown HoHoHos, these are aliens. And while I'm gone, Jessica is going to discuss various types of aliens that won't and will make a sexy Santa. She's an expert, so pay attention!

Aliens – Sexy or Scary?

Thank you very much, Liza, for hosting me the day before Christmas.

Hey, Santa is yet another story I wrote about sexy aliens, and the first in a series of sexy alien holiday stories. But for me there have always been the two types of extraterrestrials, those who want to help, and those who want to harm. Obviously the people of our planet will be more receptive to aliens if they are similar to us, humanoid. We can relate to them, understand how they work. And these are the aliens I include in my stories.

But there are several other types of aliens included in fiction that scare the bejezzes out of me. And, of course, they’re usually portrayed as some completely foreign looking creature that could be robotic, tentacled, insect-like, or something else our minds can’t even imagine.

Here are some of the movies with the scariest aliens I’ve seen portrayed:

1. Signs – I have never had a movie scare me so much. I don’t think it helped that I lived in a house surrounded by corn fields at the time.

2. Fire In The Sky – Okay, maybe this one scared me just as much as Signs. Maybe even more.

3. Body Snatchers – The same idea is seen in The Host, but I must prefer the aliens in that movie than in Body Snatchers.

4. Dreamcatcher – Based on a book by Stephen King, I couldn’t even finish the book let alone watch all of the movie.

5. War of the Worlds – This movie didn’t scare me as much, but the thought of this type of aliens coming to Earth... Don’t want to think about it.

I know there are several more that are much more scary, but I don’t like to watch those movies. LOL

Instead of worrying about these creatures visiting Earth, I like to think about the sexy ones. Here are some of the aliens I find sexy in movies:

1. Superman - #1 of all time.

2. Spock – Pointy ears and all, I love Zachary Quinto as Spock

3. Hancock – Okay, I have a thing for Will Smith whether he plays a human or an alien.

4. Hans Solo – Who can resist a bad boy?

5. Jake Sully in his Avatar body

JESSICA'S REAL EXCERPT

What is it going to take to convince her I want her? On the ride home, he’d persuaded himself to give up on Sera. Until he’d seen her on the porch. He had to seize what might be his lone opportunity.

“Why do you have such a problem accepting that I’m attracted to you?”

She faced him again, her cheeks glowing with color. “I don’t have a problem with that. In fact, I’m flattered. I have a problem with how much I’m attracted to you, how even on my date, I couldn’t get you out of my head.”

It was all the invitation he needed. Closing the space between them, he held her, pressing his lips to hers. Sera moaned, her body tight against his. She didn’t push him away, instead wrapping her arms around him, running her foot up and down the back of his calf.

He clutched her thighs, pulling her up to straddle his waist. Every moan encouraged him to keep going. He wanted more.

“Inside,” she said in a breathless whisper. “Take me into the house.”

All right! Grasping and fumbling with the handle, he managed to open the door without letting her go. Focused on her in his arms, he shuffled around blindly until his knees met her couch. He laid Sera on the cushion, but she clung to him.

“No, my bedroom. And be sure to close the door.”

Liza: No! Shit happens. But by grabbing the rabbit, you probably saved it's life and I believe Jessica will appreciate you for rescuing it from the lion.
