TAYRYM Galactic Defenders #4 by Jessica E. Subject

WHEN WRITING DOESN’T FEEL RIGHT

As an author, having a story planned out before you sit down to write it can be a great thing. Other times, it’s a burden and can cause the worst writer’s block. Why? Because sometimes the story just doesn’t feel right.

The next Galactic Defenders story was supposed to be JACE. I had the story plotted out. But when I went to write it, I didn’t like the plot. Not at all. And I didn’t know what to do to change it. So I put that aside and decided to write SCRYM. The original storyline had him going off to be a Defender with Gwenodyn following him there to enlist as well. And they’d fall in love and live happily ever after. But that felt too predictable to me. Too much like stories I’d already read and told. I wanted to write something different.

I had already established Gwenodyn as his best friend. And decided that Scrym was his nickname, not his real name. SCRYM = a shortened version of “Scram Tayrym,” which he’d heard a lot as a child. And she was usually with him. After all, they’d been friends forever.

So after deciding that Tayrym and Gwenodyn would be nothing more than best friends, I had to find a love interest for Tayrym. That wasn’t hard with a little inspiration from pieces of my world. Once I had that figured out, I went back to plotting. It came easy, and this time when I went to write TAYRYM, it felt right.

I still don’t know what I’m going to do with JACE. But once I figure out a plot for him that feels right, I will write it. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the “right” version of TAYRYM.

EXCERPT

Gwenodyn sat on the very front bench and leaned forward, examining all the players. “So, let me figure out which one you have the hots for.”

She might as well have thrown him onto the field with that statement. Tayrym wanted to run and hide. Thank goodness most of the players were at the other end.

She nudged him. “I can eliminate one already. The guy who’s the net minder at this end is one of our teachers. If it were him, you’d find ways to stay after school instead of coming here.”

True. He didn’t dislike the teachers. They were only a few years older. But, they didn’t leave him with ylafats in his stomach the way his crush did.

“And I doubt you’d go for the two shorter guys on the other team. They’re cute.” She bit her bottom lip. “Really cute. But, not your type.”

How did she know his type when he’d just told her he was attracted to guys? Though she was correct, so far.

“That leaves the best players on each team, the one with the strong cheekbones who looks like he’s dancing across the field or the younger guy on this side who is determined to win even down a player. He used to be in our class, sat behind you. I think it’s—”

The ball rocketed toward them from center field. Gwenodyn wasted no time moving in front of him to catch the ball.

“Fornax Raw! What was that for?” Sol, the net minder-teacher, called to the other player on his team.

Guri shrugged in response, his gaze on Tayrym. Or maybe Gwenodyn. Most likely her. Tayrym didn’t stand a chance.

The one Gwenodyn had said danced across the field ran over to them to collect the ball and bowed. “Sorry about that, Princess.” Once he threw the ball back onto the field, play resumed.

“Well, I wasn’t sure before, but now I’m positive you like the guy who kicked the ball right at your head. Though, after that, I’m not sure why.” She pinched his cheek. “He could have ruined your beautiful face.”

EXCERPT:
Walking into the silky rear-end of an uidiss, she came to an abrupt halt. The creature had been walking at a steady pace and then stopped. She’d failed to notice in time. Wiping fluff off her face, she turned around and walked into another hard body. “I’m so sorry.”
Hands clamped down on her arms. “Are you all right?”
She stared up into deep brown eyes. Chewing her bottom lip, she nodded. If this man hadn’t been holding on to her, she would have fallen to the ground. The word swoon held no meaning for her until now.
Am I only like this because of the ipsum I inhaled back home? Or was there something more she found heart-racing about the blue-skinned, well-muscled hunk of an Ubetron who held her up?
No, she couldn’t feel anything for him. Their races had been sworn enemies for years. Everyone across the galaxy knew that. Yet here she was, standing face to face, gazing intently at him, with no will to move.
He smiled at her, drawing her attention from his eyes to his lips. How would they taste? She’d never kissed anyone intimately before.
“You look familiar. What’s your name?”
Name? Gods, what was her name? “Ni…Nixie.” Had she told him, or only thought the word?
He released her arms to brush his fingers along her jaw line. How she remained standing, she had no idea.
“Nixie. A beautiful name belonging to a beautiful woman. Have we met before?”
Moisture pooled between her thighs. Her cheeks warmed. “Thank you, but no.” She’d definitely remember meeting him.
As he trailed a hand down her arm, she sighed. Her entire body tingled from his gentle touch.
“Okay, weird. You must remind me of someone else. Now tell me, why were you in such a rush that you walked into the rear end of that slow-moving beast? We’re supposed to be on vacation, enjoying all this planet has to offer.”
Laughing at his description of the uidiss, she leaned against his arm. Never before had she enjoyed a man’s attention like this. “I’m not visiting. I live here. Have my whole life.”
He raised his eyebrows. “Really? So, what was it like growing up on the pleasure planet?”

- also home of the Suavitas, those who practice the art of sensual massage
- natives have golden brown skin
- population numbers vary, as over half the people on the planet at any time are tourists
- where the heroine is from
Tenebrae
- a planet containing only a prison colony
- often used as a threat to misbehaving children
Earth
- the planet we live on, but in the future when governments are trying to make trade deals with other planets rather than other countries.

Review of Beyond Reach by Jessica Subject

I love the creative stories of “fight for love” that Jessica creates. And then just when you think everything is settled, she throws a surprise wrench in the works.

In Beyond Reach Prince Mekai doesn’t want to marry the woman his parents have chosen for him. So he contrives a situation which results in his friend (who is more than willing to marry her) to marry her instead.
This allows Mekai to travel to a pleasure planet to recover. And there he meets the woman of his dreams, Nixie, and lots of hot spicy sex pursues.

Some would have ended it here, but there is much more to happen. Betrayals, surprises, pain and sorrow and finally a happy ending.  Yep, just a typical Jessica Subject book.  I give it a fabulous five stars.

Jessica Subject shares lots of giveaways, fav lines, and her new book Bryce.

Today, I've got the fabulous Jessica Subject over sharing gifts and her favorite lines, or so she was led to believe. I intend to peruse all her favs and pick MY favorites, making them
"Liza's pick of the bestest."

So with no further slaughtering of the English Language, let's get started:

LIZA'S TOP FIVE LINES FROM BYRCE

#1
“You may be responsible for sending them to Niesgoo, but you’re only responsible for their deaths if you leave them there to die.”

#2
And what was she supposed to have told them? You must meet with me because I’m an alien princess? No doubt the truth would have landed her in a mental institution, or worse, a lab.

#3
A little girl dashed out in front of her, jet-black curls bouncing along her shoulders. In her tattered white gown—probably a hand-me-down from an older generation—she stared up into her eyes, no reservations about approaching royalty. “Princess Lalia, where have you been? They taught us in school you were killed in the Erebus attack.”

#4
She’d heard the alien hunters used wormholes, but had never seen or traveled through one, and hoped to never again.

#5
Bryce raised his crossbow, lining his sights on the creature standing amongst the bushes, its branch-like tentacles undulating in the gentle breeze. Focusing the crosshairs on the alien’s torso, he drew in a deep breath. He had one shot.

And now for the book you've been waiting for:

BLURB:

A dedicated Defender…

Bryce fell in love once, but after Lalia was ripped away from him, he locked his heart from feeling anything for anyone else. Instead, he devotes his life to the Galactic Alliance, killing every bloodthirsty Erebus he comes across.

A shunned princess…

Lalia Comosova fell in love with the wrong man. When her parents learned of her transgressions, they sent her to Earth to hide her error in judgment from the rest of the kingdom.

A second chance?

When these lovers are reunited after many years apart, they have a chance to find happiness together. But fate steps in and threatens to rip them apart as it did years ago.

EXCERPT:

Bryce raised his crossbow, lining his sights on the creature standing amongst the bushes, its branch-like tentacles undulating in the gentle breeze. Focusing the crosshairs on the alien’s torso, he drew in a deep breath. He had one shot. If he missed, the Erebus would cry out and alert the natives of Terra to its existence, resulting in more casualties. At first glance, no one on the planet, also called Earth, would believe an Erebus anything more than an overgrown bush, but Bryce knew the truth. He’d trained to hunt the creatures from childhood.

Each step carefully placed, he advanced until he stood twenty feet from the Erebus, no chance to miss the shot. With a slight movement of his finger, he squeezed the trigger, sending a zuranium-tipped arrow racing toward the alien.

“Quinn, would you grab me another garbage bag?”

Fornax. The creature lunged toward the female voice, Bryce’s arrow stuck in one of its tentacles. A kill, but not instant.

He loaded another arrow. At the risk of being seen, he charged through the hedges. He had to cut the Erebus off before it had a chance to kill the Terran. He leaped over metal furniture and large urns, keeping his focus on the creature.

“What the hell? Get out of my yard!”

The woman rushed him, but Bryce darted around her. When the Erebus lumbered in front of him, he raised his weapon and fired. A clean shot to the middle. The creature dropped like a fallen log, crushing the furniture it landed on.

Bryce loaded the crossbow again. No time to celebrate the kill. He had to worry about the possibility of other Erebus in the area, along with the Terran woman who had seen him. Instead of running away screaming, as he’d expected her to do, she stared, wide-eyed in horror. Not at him, but the Erebus. Her body trembled as she shuffled backward, mumbling incomprehensible words.

An unexpected sense of familiarity washed over him. He couldn’t draw his attention away from her slim figure, the way her long brown hair flowed over her shoulders. Far more attractive than he’d pictured the Terrans when others talked about them. He took a closer glance. Lalia? How had she traveled so far from home without anyone knowing? She was no stranger, and definitely not Terran. Or, perhaps she was simply a doppelganger of the woman he’d once loved. He had the sudden urge to comfort her, relieve her worry. Hold her in his arms the way he had many years ago. But what if the missing princess had somehow made her way to a planet unaware life existed beyond their own? After she’d left Hemera and him behind without so much as a goodbye, he’d searched everywhere. Though not once had he thought to look on Terra.

A ground-shattering bellow pierced the night. Bryce spun around, finding himself face-to-face with another Erebus. It stared at him with beady red eyes. Thick black goop dripped from its mouth.

Bryce raised his bow, but the creature slammed him with one of its tentacles, flinging him back. The Erebus lunged at Lalia.

Rolling to his knees, Bryce aimed and fired. He hit the alien from behind, launching it forward. Onto his former lover. Slinging the bow over his shoulder, he raced toward her. The creature’s tentacles still pulsed, even though dead. Careful not to trip himself up, he shoved his hands under the creature’s torso and heaved it off her.

Lalia stood immediately and wiped the black goop from her clothes, as if she hadn’t been flattened by an alien. “They weren’t supposed to follow me. I was supposed to be safe here.”

Liza intervews the book Bringer of Chaos by Kayelle Allen

Today, I'm interviewing Kayelle Allen's book Bringer of Chaos.
Space-Rep: Is there a giveaway.
Liza: There is.

Giveaway - Free Download

Download and print three PDF Bookmarks. The first features Six, the human warrior. The second is Pietas, the immortal warrior. The third is the two, back to back.

Space Rep: I love coloring books and bookmarks.

Liza: Today, I'm interviewing The Origin of Pietas, Bringer of Chaos.

Space Rep: Don’t we have enough chaos already?

Liza: Nope. So book with many words, may I call you Chao?

Book: Are you misspelling the Italian word for 'goodbye'?

Space Rep: No. She's spelling Chaos, but if she types more than four letters she misspells.

Book: That's the most idiotic thing I've ever heard.

Space Rep: Well, it is what it is. So what's it going to be? Chao, Semp, Brin, or Orig?

Book (sighs): How about Brin, that’s a nice name.

Liza: Finally, I feared all we were going to do is argue over your name, and I've got some serious questions for you to answer.

Brin: Such as?

Liza: Based on the information I received from a reliable source, you allowed your main character, an immortal, to get captured, held in isolation and not fed for an entire year.

Brin: Well, I would hardly say I allowed him to...

Liza: You are the book, which makes you responsible for all the characters within. And yet you did nothing while this poor immortal was stripped of everything but his honor.

Brin: Not true. I introduced a human into my pages, named Six. He took care of Pietas.

Liza: Took CARE of him? Shouldn't that include...I don't know...feeding Pie?

Brin: He had nothing to do with starving Pietas. Yes, he was the one who originally captured Pietas, but he was also the one who helped keep the immortal sane while imprisoned.

Liza: Well, excuse me if I don't let him babysit my box of kittens.

Brin: I have no idea what that means.

Liza: You don't have kittens on your planet?

Brin: No...

Liza: Well, that explains a great deal. So what happens to poor Pie?

Brin: Pietas and the human are dumped on an alien planet--

Liza: Does it have kittens?

Brin: No, I don't believe so.

Liza (huffs): So what's the game plan?

Brin: Pietas knows there are other exiled immortals and with the help of Six, he's determined to find them.

Liza: So Pie and Six are best of friends now, searching for other immortals?

Brin: (grimaces): I would not say the best of friends. Pietas has been killing humans most of his very long life, but he does allow Six to restore him to full strength and accompany him.

Liza: Wow! That's really considerate of him. Man do these two need a kitten!

Brin: Overtime Pietas does begins to wonder if he has found his first human friend in Six.

Liza: What other explanation could there be for Six restoring Pie's health?

Brin: Well, he could have restored Pietas so the immortal would keep others immortals from killing him.

Liza (thumps head on top of book)

Brin: It's a reasonable concern. This friendship could be the beginning of peace between their people, or one more backstab in an endless line of betrayals. As his trust grows, so does the depth of detail Pietas reveals. This human will either be his closest living friend or the one whose betrayal will trigger all-out vengeance by the most powerful immortal ever born.

Liza: Let me help these two out. These are kittens. Pass them out to all your characters!
Brin: Thank you...I guess.

Liza: Now may I peek beneath your covers?

Brin: Why?

Liza: Because it sounds like a very good Warrior bromance if we just add a few kittens and soften them up.

Brin: If you bring kittens into my story, I am not responsible for whatever happens to them.

Liza: What do you think will happen to them?

Brin: They'll probably be eaten...I did mention Pietas hasn't had food for a year, right?

Liza: Space Rep! Grab the kittens!

Space Rep: I told you it was a bad idea.

Liza: Just take them and go. Now, Brin, open up your cover. My readers and I want a peek!

EXCERPT
In this scene, Pietas is waiting in an airless room for humans to enter. They think they will pick up his lifeless body and put him in a stasis pod, but the immortal can hold his breath ten times longer than a human. When the soldiers enter, Pietas realizes they are from Ghost Division, a group of reanimated special ops warriors.

The stasis pod Pietas hid behind rested on the floor, and came up to mid-thigh. It hid him but allowed no view of the door. A sudden change of light told him soldiers had entered. Grunts, they wore beams on their chests to light their way. The idiots had left them on, which let him calculate the level of brightness. At least six.

That was all he warranted? He hardly knew whether to be amused or insulted.

He waited for a stirring of emotion but felt none. Smart. They'd sent either androids or ghosts with those new anti-emo chips. The latter would be fun to fight. When he killed them, would they experience a human death, or did they have to be terminated like an Ultra? How well did the chips work?

He'd find out in a minute.

A tiny trickle of fear leaked. That meant three things.
One: ghosts. Two: anti-emo chips? Worthless. Three: even the dead feared him.

More fear leaked, and then frustration. The ghosts were fighting the effect of the chip. They were afraid of being afraid. Typical. Humans underestimated the power of death. They thought dying and coming back to life meant you'd overcome the fear of dying. He had died thousands of times, yet he still avoided it. Their anti-emo chips had given them no edge whatsoever.

Excellent. He could use that.

Another hint of fear surfaced. It zinged over Pietas's skin like a cool breeze, good as a waft of air. How interesting! Emotion from the reanimated energized more than emotion from the living. He drew the aetheric fear into himself, gathering strength.
The silence meant no air had entered the room. He'd miss his favorite sound: bones breaking in his enemies.

Space Rep: Wow! This book sounds really good. I'm going to find the links to buy it. Found them!
