Cosmic Wars, book 5 in the Grand Master's Galaxy

COSMIC WARS,
book 5 in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy
Thrilling SciFi Adventure

Cosmic Wars
This is book has the most intense and dangerous missions I think I’ve ever read. Aurora Springer leaves nothing on the table in this book. It is constant trouble from beginning to end.

Nor is anything easy!  I am totally exhausted! But very very glad I read this. The detail she puts in her stories astounds me, and this one left me in near constant fear through the last half of the book.

5 stars for sure!

Blurb
Join psychic superstars, Violet and Athanor Griffin, on this epic adventure, meet aliens of all stripes, and of course, the fabulous dragons of Sythos.

Violet and Athanor Griffin reunite with their baby son after escaping from the world beyond the fiery Cosmic Rift, but they find no respite from troubles. The Grand Masters have declared Athanor dead, and are competing to replace him as Chair of the Counsel.

Hordes of bloodsucking Ixioth slavers threaten galactic civilization, and a new enemy has emerged from the alternate universe, an enemy immune to psychic forces. The dynamic couple is soon swamped with pleas for help. Athanor’s vow to crush the insectoid Ixioths and expel the Nulls hits a major obstacle. The teleportal web enables their allied enemies to make rapid strikes and escape to unknown locations, somewhere in the galaxy. Violet has a different perilous challenge. Her promise to rescue the children captured on Cinerea means she must brave the dreadful Rift and lose her psychic powers. Can the Griffins reconcile their divergent promises, or must they separate for the tasks of rescuing the prisoners and defeating the slavers?

Excerpt
A column of pink mist formed in the middle of the room, and quickly resolved into the flower Grand Master, Amarylla Threeleaf. The Wistralian’s three giant petals were tightly furled in a long bud above her short stalk and the tangle of her brown rootlets.

She opened her petals, wafting the scent of roses. Their translators rendered her greeting, “Griffin Grand Masters, your brilliant presence sweetens sap of Brightness Amarylla.”

A courteous host, Athanor stood to give a formal bow and waved his hand in a cordial gesture. “Welcome to my castle, Grand Master Threeleaf. I am grateful for your generosity in guiding the Council during my absence.”

Her petals paled, and Amarylla’s leaves rustled, “Absence of Griffin Chair sprouted thorns on Council.”

Sparking blue fire from his eyes, Athanor grunted, “Hades, I guessed as much. Tell us the bad news.”

“After Grand Master Violet blew into the Cosmic Rift, not fifteen Terran days passed before Council declared Griffin dead.”

“I might well have been killed, but Violet knew better,” he grumbled. “She perceived I was alive.”

“Advice of Grand Master Violet unheard, unheeded, lost in tumult.”

“Tumult? As dismal as that?” He barked a scornful laugh. “Did they fight for my unenviable position?”

“Choice of new Chair debated with violent winds.” Amarylla fluttered the edges of her petals.

More amused than angry, Athanor asked, “Who is my replacement?”

A faint odor of rotting vegetation hinted at the plantoid’s disgust. “Traditional combat offered for Chair. Four Grand Masters deferred to Brightness Threeleaf. Brightness declined to fight. Grand Master and Lord of Lightning, Nathan, will oppose Grand Master Baxicki for topmost branch.”

Athanor scowled and his blue aura flared. “Odin’s eye, I might have guessed those two would stir up trouble.” He paced to the window, spun around and met Violet’s gaze.

Fuming with indignation, she said, “Voids, Nathan ought to be grateful for your mercy. You refused to punish him for conspiring to destroy the portal web.”

“Mercy is rarely rewarded. Nathan claimed he repented, and I deemed Morrigu was the chief instigator of their conspiracy.” Gazing at the pink petals of Amarylla, he asked, “When is their combat scheduled?”

Her petals flushed to crimson, releasing the sharp tang of lemons. “Combat is today. Brightness agreed to hold a special meeting of the full Council at twenty hours Terran standard. Griffins must attend.”

Quickly checking the relative planetary times on her com, Violet exclaimed, “Voids, the meeting’s in one hour and forty-five minutes.” She straightened and glared at her mate. “We’ll have to get dressed.”

“What’s the rush? We’ll be ready in a tenth of the time.” Athanor laughed. “By Ragnar’s fires, the fools will tremble when I appear with Violet. They cannot overcome the joint force of the two Griffins.”

The Book will be 99c until the end of July.

Gail Koger shares Crossing Quinn

Today, I have invited Gail Koger over to share the crazy mob of aliens in her latest book.

Liza: Gail, I have long ago determined you write the funniest Sci-Fi novels since Douglas Adams died and thus had to stop writing. Is it possible that the soul of Douglas Adam has embedded in your brain and the two brilliant brains are what has created your latest book, Crossing Quinn? Seriously, this is the funniest Sci Fi Book I’ve ever read.

Gail: Thank you so much. It’s all those little voices in my head. They never shut up. Who knows? Douglas Adams might be in there too. Oh crap! All my characters in Crossing Quinn want to meet you. I mean every, single one. This is not good. Not good at all. How fast can you run? The var bugs are speedy varmints and once they latch on, it’s dinner time baby. They also leave all those nasty, oozing sores. And the rattling clicks they make, rivals the sound of a thousand angry rattlesnakes. Ugh.

Let’s not forget the Tai-Kok who are always ravenous, then again, so is little Clio, the baby Katanic shapeshifter.  So, we’ll need food. Lots and lots of food and a laser pistol or two to keep the monstrous Tai-Kok from trying to eat us. Which brings us to Dolon, Xenia’s backstabbing uncle. He will try to pull something underhanded and he’ll need zapping too.

Liza: Food is doable, but laser pistols? Fresh out.

Gail: Oh crap! The Coletti warlords will want to check you for any psychic abilities. Deny. Deny. Deny.  You are just a normal human. Got it?

Liza: But, I’m not psychic.

Gail: Perfect. Just keep saying it like that.

Liza: Really. I am not psychic.

Gail: Of course not. The next thing we will need is a first aid kit or a doctor for Xenia’s mother. She tends to faint. A lot. Her husband, Lysis is a Berserker and has a bit of a temper. No sudden moves. Do not pick up a weapon of any kind. Lysis has the tendency to shoot first and verify later.

Stay far, far away from Zarek, the powerful Coletti Overlord. If he finds out you have any psychic abilities, it’s wham-bam, you’re mated to a Coletti warrior. You do know their man parts are unique, right?
Liza: How unique?

Gail: They come equipped with tentacles. Yep, you heard me. Tentacles. Under no circumstances when you see them, should you shriek and run. The Coletti warriors love a good chase.

Liza: Hold on, this is a blog, not War and Peace Sci Fi style! I’ll let in five, but that’s my limit.

Gail: Okay, but you get to tell them. You do remember that Colettis warlords are very good at mind control?

Liza:  What the hell. Let’s invite them all.

Gail: Smart girl. What’s your first question?

Liza: I’ll start with Xenia. What is your fav part in this book?

Xenia: When baby Clio puked all over Quinn. The expression on his face was priceless. My second favorite part was when I got to kick Quinn’s arrogant ass. Coletti warriors don’t think they can be defeated by a mere female. Quinn didn’t know about my berserker abilities and he forgot to search my mother. Big mistake. My mother shot him with a tranquiller dart.  We chained Quinn up and locked him in a holding cell. Naturally, he found my warrior skills very appealing and fell in love with me.

Liza:  Okay, I wasn’t expecting any puking and my sources say you kinda cheated when you took Quinn down.

Xenia: Just a tad.

Liza:  Right. So, tell about your mother.

Xenia: She’s a brilliant archeologist, she’s highly intelligent, but doesn’t have a lick of common sense. She’s emotional, easily frightened, and she doesn’t follow orders. My mother has fainting down to an art form, and her singing is so bad it scares off the monstrous Tai-Kok!

Liza: Seriously, she scares the Tai-Kok? The bogymen of the galaxy?

Xenia: She does. They turn tail and run.

Liza: What about your father, Lysis?

Xenia: He’s the best father in the world and he’s the “Berserker”. Not even the Overlord is able to defeat him. I am proud to say, I have his berserker genes, which is why Quinn is...oops, I should say WAS tied up. Quinn, come meet Liza, she wants to know all about you. The warlord practically bristles with weapons.

Liza: Planning on going to war, Quinn?”

Quinn: With Xenia and her mother on my ship, I plan on being armed at all times. Does the Overlord know Liza has psychic abilities?

Liza: Me? Nope. Not a bit. Moving along, let’s get to know more about that precious little princess in your arms, Xenia.

Xenia: This is Clio. She’s a baby Katanic shapeshifter. She’s extremely intelligent and can assume any forms. The Ta-Kok ate her mother and I got the pleasure of blowing the hell out of their base.  Clio is now part of my family.  We are sisters of the heart. The only problem is keeping her fed. Katanics have the appetite of a velociraptor.

Liza: Clio, you are such a pretty princess. I can’t imagine you eating anyone!

Clio: Me hungry. You taste good? She morphs into a silky black creature with massive tentacles.  A mouth with serrated teeth appears in her body.

Liza: Oh shit! I’m outta here. She runs from the room.

Xenia: Huh?  I guess the interview is over.

Quinn: Too bad. There is a rumor going around that you’ve never been kissed?
Xenia: I haven’t.

Gail: Oh God.

Quinn: Pucker up sweetheart. It’s an easy fix.

Blurb

Quinn Jones is a formidable Coletti warlord. His mission is to capture Xenia and bring her back to Tanith to be mated with a warrior the Overlord has chosen. Problem is, Quinn finds himself falling for the beautiful Farin. Her unusual “psychic powers, combat training and berserker abilities” make her the perfect mate for him. How does he convince Xenia and the Overlord that she’s meant to be his?

Xenia and her parents are relic hunters who just discovered the fabled home world of the Nabateans. She isn’t about to leave the greatest find of the century to hook up with some Coletti. Not happening. Ever. No matter how many threats the Overlord makes or that he’s sending his best hunter to apprehend her. Okay, she’ll admit she’s drawn to the handsome warlord and she loves the way Quinn’s heavily muscled body fills out his black battle suit, but the egotistical jerk is about to get his ass handed to him.

When the galaxy is threatened with annihilation, Xenia and Quinn join forces to stop the murderous Tai-Kok. Fate has brought them together and nothing will stand in the way of their victory or their love.

Excerpt:

“Find out how the Coletti is able to bypass my security programs,” my father instructed.

“Yes, Papa.” I waited until Dolon’s attention was on my mother before backing into the command center. I closed the door and turned to face the warrior. The direct approach was usually the best option when dealing with Coletti warlords. I took one look at the Coletti’s arrogant expression and decided to have some fun. “What did you say your name was again? Troublesome?” I shook my head. “No. That wasn’t it. Sorry, I’m not good at remembering the names of Zarek’s servants.”

“My name is Quinn Jones. I am Zarek’s hunter and I hold warlord status,” he responded with a dangerous glint in his eyes.

“Whatever.” I hid a smile. The egotistical ass really didn’t like my dismissive attitude. He had expected me to be in awe of his amazing good looks and the fact he held the prestigious rank of warlord. “My father wishes to know how you managed to circumvent our security protocols.”

Quinn shrugged. “I have my ways. Give me your coordinates, and I can help with your guests.”

“Papa doesn’t need your help.”

“Four warriors against one? Not good odds.”

“You haven’t met my father, and it’s not your problem.” I severed the link.

The screen popped back on. “It is my problem if you’re injured or killed.”

“Let me set you straight. One. Papa is quite capable of dealing with our guests. Two. I might look harmless, but I’m not. Three. I. Am. Not. Going. To Tanith. Go start a war or steal some other female.”

“I will find you, and I will take you to Tanith,” Quinn promised in a quiet, scary voice.

Gak! Typical stubborn male. “Do you always do what the Overlord tells you?”

“Yes, and I never disappoint Detja.”

A smart male never did. “My father says Coletti warriors mindlessly follow orders and are ball-less. Is he right?”

Quinn raised an inquiring eyebrow. “Curious about a warrior’s body, are you, darlin’?”

I blinked in surprise. I had expected more threats, not for him to start flirting with me.

He grinned, pure devilry in his eyes. “Want a peek at my goods?”

For a brief second, I was tempted. His black battle suit displayed his heavily muscled form to perfection, but Papa hadn’t raised a fool. I plastered a love-stricken expression on my face and gushed, “Oh, I know exactly what you look like, lovey.” I projected the image of a wrinkled, hairy body with sagging male breasts and thick clumps of fibrous warts obscuring the groin. “Dead on, right?”

Quinn laughed. “Clever girl. Detja said you were full of surprises.”

Why was he being so charming? Was it a delaying tactic? Did Quinn have a way to track my transmission? “A word of warning. No one messes with my father. Not even the Overlord.”

“Zarek’s eager to add a fire-starter and illusionist to the Coletti gene pool. What the Overlord wants, the Overlord gets. We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Quinn stated, dropping his flirtatious manner.

Quinn had finally revealed his true self. A relentless hunter with a bit of a temper.

Liza Reviews

Gail Koger shows a true talent for Comedic Sci-Fi
I loved this book from the constantly fainting mother, to the sassy comebacks of the heroine. She fears absolutely nothing. Blowing stuff up to right wrongs is just a typical day for her.  While working on a planet with critters far worse than ticks & chiggers combined, her mother created a repellant so she could continue her archeological digs in peace. While it seems like such an inconsequential matter, it turns out to save their lives several times. Especially, when they discover the creatures love the blood of the worst group of aliens in the entire galaxy: The Ta-Kok.

In my opinion, the second most evil is the heroine’s uncle.

The third worst thing in the universe is a crappy fellow that runs the cleaning of crap in the tunnels of a planet...can’t recall which one, maybe Tanith. There are lots of planets in space if you haven’t noticed. This cretin ensured our heroine had a horrible time cleaning crap....not that anyone would ever want the job.

And these are just a few of the never-ending moments of near death, but very funny bits in this delightful story.

There is also explicit sex scenes with Xenia and Quinn near the end. Since Quinn is a Coletti and has different hardware than a human male, Xenia has a bit more fun than mere earthlings normally have. But hey, we can dream can’t we?

I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for thirty-one years and to keep insanity at bay, I took up writing. Not to worry. The insanity isn’t catching – much. Other than the addiction to chocolate and the twitch in my left eye, I’m good. Next up in the Coletti Warlord series is Shenanigans.

Excerpt

Water rippled. Giant bivalves clacked shut on all sides. A large object loomed in the darkness. A monstrous siork propelled by long fins like a winged serpent moved into the blue glow of the mollusks. Its enormous fang-filled mouth gaped three times the length of a man. Biting her lip, Nikki eased her zapper from the holster. Her hiding place seemed a fragile and inadequate protection against this monster.

The green skinned man whirled toward Nikki. Diving into the same shelter, he knocked her to the ground and dropped beside her. Jolted by the impact, she blinked at his face, faintly visible in the blue luminescence. His eyes widened a fraction, and he gave a wry smile of recognition. Pinning her down with one arm, he gripped his harpoon and stared out.

Waves surged against the giant mollusks, rocking their shelter. The blue glow faded. Above them, the monstrous beast bashed against the shells. A loud snap indicated a cracked shell. Swirls of blue-green blood spurted across their view as the siork crushed its victim.

Her heart thumping in terror, Nikki cowered next to the strange man.

Long minutes later, the roiling waves calmed as the giant predator moved away.

The man stood, gripped her elbow, and pulled Nikki onto her feet. The diagonal slits of his gills pulsed open and closed on the sides of his deep chest. His intense gaze flicked up and down, appraising her figure in a rapid glance. Settling on her face, his green eyes warmed in admiration. He smiled. The handsome smile she remembered so well.

Flushed in triumph, Nikki gave a silent laugh. She had located her mysterious rescuer, and they were grinning at each other like fools.

Review of Aurora Springers’ Europa

There is none better than Aurora Springer when it comes to creating biological creatures. Her books are always rich with unique beings, and Europa is no exception. I was fascinated with the multitude of creatures she creates for Europa.

I thoroughly enjoyed the love story between the female human (biologist) and a water alien (Watcher).

Not surprisingly, not everyone trusts the other humanoid race. The question is, will those who mistrust the other sentients destroy all chances of the two species working together. There are those on both sides who believe the other beings are a threat and should be removed.

And as always, Aurora provides exceptional detail in setting the stage and keeping the reader on the edge to see what happens next. And with her, you really don’t know until you turn the page.
I give this five stars!

The Sky Regency by JL Carter

Today, I have JL Carter over. A Regency era Alien invasion Sci-Fi intrigued me. So I bought the book and reviewed it. I am most impressed!

The Sky Regency
by
JL Carter

BLURB

All she wanted was a change.
All he wanted was a mate.

It’s 1810, and Europe is at war as Napoleon stages his great march across the continent and the British Empire battles the threat. King George III’s illness leaves him raving about sky invasions—rants that his courtiers dismiss as the thoughts of a madman.

Margaret Swinton has her own problems; unwillingly promised to Julian Barwick, Duke of Bridgewater and a royal insider, she struggles to find feelings for him, something that her family cannot understand.

However, History will soon be transformed when strange lights start to appear over England: a new invader with a power that easily overwhelms the primitive British forces. As George III repeals the Regency Act, Margaret meets Aidar, the gorgeous and dreaded Prince of the Sky Men.

Margaret quickly finds herself trapped in a deadly, deceit-filled love triangle in a world that has changed forever. The stakes are high, and one wrong move could easily spell disaster…

EXCERPT

She’s standing in the middle of the city. A massive clock tower rises from the center of it. The building is clearly a recent addition; large sections of it have been made up of strange, copper colored metal plates. Rather than a clock face, an elaborate set of gears and toggles don the front top of the tower.
The streets are empty. There is no destruction – but there are additions, and many of them. Those copper metal plates are everywhere. They cling to the sides of buildings, both old and new. They have been plastered into the cobbled walk, taking the place of bricks that have no doubt been destroyed in the war.
Strange words replace the signs. They have been carved onto the walls, the windows, and the other placards. Margaret can’t read them, but she has a feeling that, much like the posters advertising propaganda, they have more meaning than anyone would dare imagine.
“Hello? Hello,” calls Margaret. Her boots click clack on the ground with every step that she takes. No one answers her. It doesn’t look like anyone is here. “Hello? Someone? Anyone?”
It’s strange.
For the most part, when Margaret dreams, she doesn’t know that she’s asleep until long after she’s woken up. Now though, Margaret’s mind is very clear; she knows that this is a dream, and yet can’t shake the feeling that this is of the utmost importance, that ignoring it would be a grave mistake.
And so, she wanders down the streets, no longer familiar with all that changes that they have undergone. A busted wagon rests on the corner of Fifth and Oakland Street. The windows have yet to be patched on the Carousel - a local bakery, known for their scrumptious biscotti.
Occasionally, Margaret tries to call out, but no one ever answers. At least, not until she rounds the bend onto Jasmine Lane.
That’s when she sees it.
There’s a dark shape at the very end of the path. The moment that Margaret’s eyes land on it, he turns and races down the sidewalk.
He?
Despite the fact that the figure is mostly unclear, Margaret has no doubt that it’s a male. She gives chase, suddenly overwhelmed with the desperate need to catch him.
“Come back,” she cries. “Come back!”
But it’s to no avail. Margaret chases the man all through the city, only for him to vanish at the dead end on Carson Road. She’s left standing there in the reformed city, alone, lungs aching as they try to draw in a proper breath.
Margaret closes her eyes, opens them again.
She’s still there.
“Wake up,” says Margaret, firmly. There are eyes on her, making the hair along the back of her neck prickle. When she looks, she can’t find anyone.
Slowly. Margaret starts to back out of the alley.
“Just wake up. Come on now, Margaret. It’s not that hard of a thing to do. Just wake u—"
Her back hits something solid. Margaret yelps and spins around.
It’s the dark shape.
One by one, the street lights flicker into being. Their soft glow casts awful shadows on the man’s face, but it does illuminate it to some degree.
It’s Aidar. His eyes are hooded, lips pulled back into a gruesome sort of smile. The purple scales around his eyes are stunning, and the others are coming into existence fast.
Aidar opens his mouth, and a serpentine tongue rolls out from between his lips. It flicks at the air, like a snake trying to taste its surroundings. Piece by piece, the scales fall away, revealing a pulsing, twisting mass of unrecognizable flesh.
Margaret screams.
When she wakes up, she’s still screaming.

Review of The Sky Regency by J.L.Carter

The story begins as a historical romance between a young woman named Margaret and Julian, the duke, with lots of sexual moments, but they all had a purpose. But then an alien species invades England and I became absolutely mesmerized.

Prince Aidar looks like a man, until you piss him off. Then he turns into the alien he is. As the aliens take control, Aidar moves in with Margaret while Julian is off planning ways to stop the aliens. He takes her as his lover. He is not gentle, but she likes it.

Julian has given Margaret a necklace, which he claimed was a family heirloom, but Aidar insists the necklace once belonged to his people.

Both her lovers (Aiden and Julian) are dominant in their treatment of her, but she accepts and enjoys their actions. Honestly, she has no idea whom she loves the most.

She doesn’t see the violence outside as humans fight the aliens. She only sees two men, enemies, yet she loves them both.  I will tell you no more, only that soon one will feel betrayed. But really, she did need to choose.

While this book ends with a proper HEA, I feel there is another novel in the works and I for one cannot wait to read.

The story is delightfully creative, genuinely engaging, and most unique.

The sex scenes are never gratuitous, and thus, despite explicit sex, they didn’t offend me at all. I actually enjoyed them.

I give it a hot sizzling 5 stars!

Bio J.L. Carter

Johan Lynn Carter was born in small town Texas from an avid Regency romance reader and a sci-fi geek. As a result, she was destined to marry a Jedi Duke and be trained to become an a**-kicking lady.

Growing up as a financial analyst in Austin, she used to write kinky fan-fiction on the back of Excel spreadsheets. Thankfully, her boss never found out (but his secretary did!).

When she’s not writing, Johan likes to read sci-fi and paranormal romance books (the more fangs and claws, the better), try not to burn everything she cooks, Netflix with her husband and raise her two kids to not become as weird as she is.
