Aurora Springer shares Gargoyle Hunt, Liza Reviews

Gargoyle Hunt,
Book 3 of the Secret Supers

Danger is the last thing on Estelle’s mind when she visits the University of Oxenford for a summer course. But, mysterious thefts and shadowy figures spur her into action. With Toby five thousand miles away, Estelle and her winged horse must hunt for the culprits alone. Soon they are embroiled in a mixed bag of aliens and ancient magic. Toby’s unexpected arrival throws her into turmoil and spurs events into a climax. Under pressure to succeed, Toby is trapped in a web of deceit. The two supers have a week to catch the crooks and salvage his reputation.

Excerpt

Toby was standing under the arched stone entrance holding a brown paper bag. Instead of his trademark black T-shirt exposing his muscular arms and cat tattoo, he wore a long sleeved, dress shirt. He smiled and walked toward her, looking hunky despite the wary expression in his shadowed eyes. Estelle longed to hug him.

“Toby!” Questions burst from her, “Are you okay? What happened in London?”

“Hi babe! Sorry I’m late.” He waved the paper bag, wafting the salty small of greasy fries to her nostrils. “Picked up a steak pie and chips. Ate half of it already.” He glanced over her shoulder, straightened and stared.

Estelle turned to see what had caught his interest. In a short scarlet dress and matching red shoes with stiletto heels, Cynthia Mortimer sailed toward them. A mismatched pair of men accompanied her. A tall, distinguished-looking man with iron gray hair and a charcoal gray suit clasped her left elbow. A sallow-complexioned man with slick black hair, a head shorter than her, walked at Cynthia’s right side.

Cynthia’s gaze clamped onto Toby and she eased away from her escorts. Batting her inch-long fake lashes, she arrowed straight for him and stood temptingly close. In her high heels, her eyes were level with Toby’s. She spoke in a throaty, seductive voice, “You must be new. I didn’t see you at the banquet on Sunday.”

“Visiting from California,” Toby drawled, eying her as if he were mesmerized.

“I’m Cynthia Mortimer, Doctor of Philosophy. You must attend my seminar tomorrow afternoon.” Her tone as sweet and cloying as molasses, she purred, “I am open to questions after the lecture.”

Seething with envy and furious with Toby, Estelle clenched her fists. Her palms itched to scorch her rival with fire.

The distinguished man tapped Cynthia’s arm. “Come along, my dear. We’ll be late for the performance.”

The shorter man inserted, “Yeah. You can’t miss the opening act. Songs are real swell.”

With a parting flick of her eyelashes, Cynthia walked away on the arms of her escorts. Still enthralled, Toby rotated, his gaze following her. Cynthia’s slender legs looked impossibly long between her miniskirt and the stiletto heels.

“Toby!” Estelle hissed.

He turned to face her. “I have to talk to her.”

“What?” she screeched, clenching fists hot with flames.

“Chill! Winterbourne said she could help find the crooks. Not sure if I trust him.” Toby rubbed her arm. “Find somewhere private and I’ll tell you about my day.” He groaned, “Ain’t been easy so far.”

Starrella/Estelle is back!  This time she’s on a six-week summer course at Oxenford, England with her friend, Diane. Student by day and super hero by night. Author Aurora Springer throws up something new for every book. This time someone is animating stone gargoyles. And unlike prior creatures, the gargoyles can see right through Starrella’s invisibility cloaking.

Fortunately, Toby flies over for a week, because she’s going to need his help. There are also a great many thefts occurring at the college which Starrella, Toby and her friends try to figure out. I loved the sleuthing feel of this book. While sleuthing, they discover some people are not who they claim to be.

Also, the on-and-off-again romance between Estelle and Toby finally gets settled. (I can’t tell you how it is settled, that would be a spoiler.)

This was another delightful read. Aurora brings to life book 3 of the Young Adult Starella series. I love her creative details.  It’s fantasy on steroids!

Check out the Secret Supers series by Aurora Springer, Bk 2 recently out.

Starrella Falls, Book 2 of the Secret Supers

College freshman Estelle Wright has it all: a superpower, a flying horse, and a hunky boyfriend. All is threatened when her old enemy swears revenge, ruthless killers target Atalanta, and Toby is under pressure to dump her. But, Estelle’s knack of finding trouble scuttles his plans. With their lives at stake, they face agonizing decisions where the wrong choice leads to disaster.

If you enjoy superhero adventures with quirky animals, thrilling chases and a rollercoaster romance, read this fun story.

It’s non-stop action from beginning to end. This time, the giant creatures threatening humans are reptiles…far larger than they are supposed to be. The romance between Toby and Starrella looks shaky through much of the book, but love always finds a way.

I give this a 4.5 rounding up due to so much action. I lost count of all the attacks…seriously.

Their meals arrived and Toby tackled the burger with his usual gusto. While he was occupied with the food, Estelle chewed slowly and stared around the pub. A man entering drew her attention by his formal attire of a dark suit and tie, unlike the regular customers in their casual clothes. A short beard and dark glasses hid the stranger’s expression. He strolled to the bar and stared at the rows of bottles on the mirrored wall.

Estelle nudged Toby. “Don’t look yet. He just came in.”

“Who?” Toby mumbled through a mouthful of fries.

She hissed in his ear, “I think it’s Croaker in disguise. Imagine him with a beard.”

“Blast! He’s seen my photo from those kidnappers.” Toby swallowed his fries too fast, and smothered a cough with his hand. Examining his half empty glass of beer, he looked around as if in search of the waitress with a refill. “Reckon you’re right,” he whispered. “He’s seen us. Watch out! Croaker’s dangerous. Uses poison darts.”

Squeezing his fingers, Estelle hissed, “Okay. What’ll we do?”

“Finish our food, pay up and walk out like we’re cool.”

“Sure. My hands are itching to flame.”

“See what he does first,” Toby advised. “Don’t want to create a scene.” He beckoned to the waitress and asked for the check. While they waited to pay, he asked, “Where’s the mare?”

“Not far. We’re in contact.”

They eased out of the booth. Toby slipped his arm around Estelle’s waist and they strolled to the rear exit leading to the parking lot. Estelle glanced back before they reached the door. Croaker stood facing them.

“He’s watching,” she murmured.

“Call Rockette,” Toby whispered. When they stepped outside, Toby gestured for Estelle to wait where she would be concealed behind the door. “Let him spot me first.” He walked to his motorcycle and bent on one knee, pretending to examine the front tire.

The man came out and focused on Toby. His face twisted in an evil smirk and he raised his hand. A needle point glinted. Estelle blazed at his fingers.

He dropped the dart, cried a Zarnoth curse and lunged at Estelle.

Racing across the parking lot, Toby grabbed Croaker’s arm and swung him round. In a blur of motion, a second dart shone in Croaker’s hand. Toby punched his fist into Croaker’s chin.

Croaker crumpled. Catching him under the arms, Toby eased him to the ground.

Brakes squealed and a man yelled, “Hey!” Mark Copper jumped out of his white sedan and Diane slid out of the passenger side. “What’s going on?” Mark called.

Straightening and gazing at Mark, Toby drawled, “It’s that guy who’s wanted for murder.”

“What guy?” Mark strode over and stared at the body.

“Croaker, the man wanted for murder,” Estelle explained. “We recognized him when we were in the pub. He followed us out here.”

Aurora Springer shares: Super Starella, Liza Reviews it.

Super Starrella, Book 1 of the Secret Supers

Teen superhero, Starrella, and her flying horse combat vicious villains in the skies of Atalanta.

The quiet summer before her freshman year turns frighteningly weird after Estelle Wright trespasses onto an Army base. Blown into the air and knocked unconscious, she wakes with a nascent superpower. Not to mention a winged horse with a snarky attitude and a mind of her own.

Back home in Atalanta, a serial killer is targeting the students at Goldman University. Before long she must juggle college classes with sneaking out of the house after dark to battle alien monsters. Estelle’s life is in danger, but who can she trust: handsome Captain Copper from military intelligence, or hunky Toby, the tough gangster with a motorbike? Both men have secret agendas, but falling in love is not in their plans.

Aurora Springer is one of the most creative authors I know.
Super Starella is lighter fare than the Grand Masters Trilogy, but in both cases the world building is fabulous, the characters well-rounded, and this plot is just FUN!
Prepare to have a fabulous time!

Excerpt
A man stepped out of the darkness, all in black except for his eyes. In the dull black material of his close-fitting suit, he was almost invisible, like a moving shadow. Even so, she recognized his distinctive broad shoulders and muscular arms.

“Toby!” Starrella cried. “What the heck is going on?” She stepped closer, holding out her hand to show the small flame rising from her palm.

His eyes glinted in the light. “Super Starrella’s firepower! Great, we’ll need you for the mantis attack,” he drawled. “They’re out in force tonight.”

“No! Not the mantises.” She waved a hand at him and pointed back at herself. “You, me, and these silly costumes? What does it all mean?”

“Didn’t they tell you at the Clinic?”

Starrella assumed he meant Dr. Netta, who had spoken to her when she had woken in the strange room after the explosion on the firing range. She raised her eyebrows. “I was shown how to change the colors of my costume. Cute, but doesn’t explain anything. Rockette told me more than Dr. Netta did.” Glaring at him, she probed, “Wait. How did you know my secret name?”

“Your mare told my cat.” He looked behind her and she twisted around. Over in the shadows, Rockette and the black jaguar faced each other. The winged mare tossed her mane and lowered her nose, while the big cat rose on its haunches and lifted a large paw to tap the horse in a friendly greeting.

“They’re getting acquainted,” Toby said. “The jag cat is Growler.”

As if on cue, the black cat looked towards them and its eyes flashed red. Toby stared at Growler for a second, and then beckoned to Starrella. He barked, “Big attack on Centennial Square. Come on, Star! Need your fire power.” Toby thumped her on the shoulder and raced down the street in the direction of the city square. The powerful jaguar loped after him.
