Scavenger's Mission @Liza0Connor

By
Liza O’Connor

How to get along in the SkyRyders. Be male and don’t fly better than your captain. Have your family send their best sweets in your monthly care package so you can give them to your captain. Accept your position as Dog for the first year of training.

If you are female, expect to be abused, tormented, and diminished, because as far as the captain is concerned, females are only good for one thing. And if you refuse to play, prepare to die.

So what’s going to happen to Alisha when she flies with skills far beyond her captain’s and knows him to be the one who murdered her friend?

Scavenger’s Mission

Blurb
Meet Alisha: A young woman who refuses to live the life her parents want.
In a single month, Alisha Kane has gone from a wealthy debutante to street girl to scavenger.  While testing her new flying skills in the Cully Canyon, Alisha incurs a near-death crash landing. She’s “rescued” by a colonel of the SkyRyders and her life changes forever.
Meet Logan: A SkyRyder colonel in charge of a sleepy fort with little to do other than arrest the occasional scavenger.
For the first time in his life, Logan’s attracted to a young woman, only she’s probably a scavenger and he’ll have to arrest her.  But first, he offers her a shower and food while he checks on his crew. His videographer has captured her extraordinary flight through the Cully and her flying is astounding!
He forgoes arresting her and puts his career at risk by asking MAC to assess her skills and integrity as a potential SkyRyder. If he can get Alisha into the SkyRyders, it will be his greatest contribution to the Corps.
Meet MAC: The Artifical Intelligence that runs the SkyRyders Corps.
Upon seeing her arrival, MAC upgrades Alisha’s test. Her flying skills are not just excellent; they exceed what was previously thought possible. MAC classifies her as its top asset and soon she proves her value.
But…the SkyRyders remain a male-dominated Corps where Alisha’s sense of right and wrong often clashes with her superiors. How long can a rebellious young woman survive in a regimented Corps?

Excerpt
After her third stall-out and dunking on the ridge, Alisha attempted to out-climb him, but Washington and Ollie were behind her, diverting a major portion of her wind. All she did was increase the distance of her fall when she stalled. Thank God the suit she wore was three sizes too large, for it helped her to slow the descent and direct her fall into an overhanging tree so the wind-catcher caught in its limbs, preventing her from smashing down onto pointy granite rocks at high speed.
When the tree limbs broke from the force of impact, she still fell and hurt her knee in the tumble, but at least she lived.
She had hoped DC would be satisfied with the results of the day. She’d been thoroughly beaten, humiliated, and humbled. While severe, her injury would not cause him censure. His punishment had been perfectly planned and executed.
To her shock, he commanded her to get up and take another run. Alisha realized something had broken in his twisted mind. It wasn’t his intent to punish her. He planned to kill her.
Thus, Alisha saw no alternative but to fly into the wind farm. Using a standard catcher, death was a probability, but if she didn’t escape DC and his obedient squad, she now realized death was a certainty. If his intent had been anything but murder, he would have stopped after the last crash.
How she managed to turn and steer her clumsy catcher into the farm, she didn’t know. Feigning left, she pulled the catcher hard right, aiming between two rows of invisible blades. The greatest danger was that the wind would blow her catcher into a blade. There would be no recovery. Within seconds of first contact, the blades would reel her in and chop her body into a thousand pieces.
Without question, she’d be safer if she just collapsed her catcher and hit the ground, but if she landed too close to the border of the farm, DC could hunt her down on foot. With her leg busted up, she’d be the slowest rabbit he’d ever bagged.
Alisha held the catcher steady against the west wind until she estimated she was a mile into the farm. She released her harness at the exact same time she collapsed her catcher. She hoped it would fall safely to the ground and not wrap up in a wind generator, but if it did, she sure as hell didn’t want to follow it up.
She hit the ground favoring her strong leg, but it didn’t matter. The pain was so intense that she rolled into a ball, trying desperately not to black out.
“Get up,” she warned herself. “Hide the catcher and get away from here.”
Somehow Alisha forced herself to move farther into the farm. She didn’t worry about leaving prints in the sand. The wind blew so hard any footprints disappeared in seconds.
After walking over half a mile east into the farm, she noticed blood dripping from her knee. She unzipped her suit and pulled off her shirt, wrapping it tightly around the open wound. The pressure hurt like hell, but she had to stop the bleeding. While the sand covered the drops of blood in seconds, the tracking gear DC had could still follow it.
Realizing they had to be close behind, she altered her direction and headed south.
A sense of danger made her turn around. When she did, she saw the laser bead on her shoulder. She weaved through the windmill posts, hoping the metal would confuse the bullet as it attempted to follow the path to its target. When she heard the bullet ricochet on metal, she stopped for a moment and re-assessed the situation.

Sheila Hoag shares how Genetically Engineered Humans think of Sex.

It’s me again.  Thank you Liza, for letting me blabber on about my books.  Pretty soon, there will be a new one.  So today, I think I'll delve into the romance/not romance aspect of my Wildblood series.
Fact 1 - Shannon loves Mac, and the feeling is mutual. It's not something that will change, but it will evolve.

Fact 2 - Both are Genetically Engineered humans and if intelligence was still measured in IQs, they'd be high up on that scale. We know very smart people have thought processes that can be . . . unique. Same for the Gen En. Combine those, and it's chaos!

Fact 3 - The world they've grown up in is nothing like the world we know. Monogamy is a thing, mostly that their parents know. The Vista is a small, isolated society, and this limits many things, including the gene pool. This factor comes in to play later, but it's always there.

So. Mac and Shan. They have each other, and they have other relationships. The Gen En, the Altered humans in particular don't equate one relationship with another. That is, if they happened to be having sex with a particular person, it has no bearing on what they are doing with other people. It's even rare for jealousy to show up, because they just don't see love and/or sex as a rivalry.
Could that change? Oh, hell yes. I never know where these three (Wade, Mac & Shan) are going to go, that I hadn't planned.
Do I see future problems between Mac and Hunter? Or either of them and the hinted at 'other man'? Please see previous paragraph.
The problem my MCs run across is something they have no control over. This makes it all the more frustrating for them. There is nothing they can do about their genetics. There is nothing they can do to change the fact, that if they would have children, those children would be plagued by the same (or worse) problems that they've dealt with their entire lives. Shan and Mac understand, they can't have a future together, in the traditional sense. Of course, they aren't 'traditional' in any sense of the word!
This leaves her relationship with Hunter even more speculative. Hunter's father wanted to eliminate human genetic testing, to make it illegal. He still believes he was right, and he’s a major force in future books of the series. What Shannon is, he doesn't know yet, other than his long-lost son has more than a passing interest in her. Their future? Hunter is a stabilizing force in her life; Shannon challenges him in ways he never expected.
So, is it a romance?  Come on – life is filled with romance, the biggest adventure of all!  Yes, it is, BTW.  There wouldn’t be much of a story if the members of Team Three were just casual acquaintances.  Or if their relationships didn’t change.  Or if I gave away any big spoilers.

Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood is in full edit mode right now. In the meantime, go catch up on the story with The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood, available on all e-formats now.  It’s a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, action-adventure.  Say that, three times fast.

Tara Quan talks Humor

(Liza thinks space towels are inherently funny)
Today, I've invited over an expert in Humor and Romance. As you know, 80% of readers think I am hilarious, and the other 20% thinks I'm not funny in the least. So I invited Tara Quan to share her take on humor.
Now behave and read quietly, please.

On Humor and Romance
I’d like to thank Liza for having me over today. We ran into each other on Facebook, and I’m very excited to check out her little spot on the Internet.
Writing a post apocalyptic romance lends itself to some dark themes, but I’m a firm believer in humor. No matter how dangerous the situation, I try to find ways for my characters to make each other laugh. Liking someone is, after all, the basis of loving someone, and no relationship would last without the occasional giggle and smile.
I’ve read countless books that have made my heart ache, that left me in tears as I follow characters down torturous paths. What keeps me reading, what makes me root for the happily ever after, are the moments when those same characters manage to bring a twinkle to each other’s eye.
After all, without a touch of humor, their romance wouldn’t be quite as fun.
And here's a bit of info about Tara's latest book:
Catching Red

Scarlet “Red” Ryding is on a mission. To prevent mass suicide, she must fulfill her grandmother’s evil wishes and return posthaste. With knives in hand, she dives headfirst into an abandoned hospital full of zombies. But after getting trapped within, she is forced to accept help from the world’s most dangerous predator—a man.
Covert Agent Marcus Woodsman received strict instructions against interfering in the affairs of nomads. As a spy for the Federal Military Agency, his mandate is to observe and report. But when he finds a little redhead caught in the center of a brain-eater swarm, conscience compels him to put his ax to good use. By the time he realizes this smart-ass scout comes equipped with a world of trouble, it’s too late—he would do anything to keep her safe.
As Red and her Woodsman work together to survive undead, brave a snowstorm, and bring down an evil cult, they learn to laugh, love, and fight for happiness. The second book in Tara Quan’s Undead Fairy Tales series, Catching Red is a post-apocalyptic thriller with a happily ever after.

Scarlet woke to the delicious smell of charred venison and cooking fruit. The rusty feeling between her joints was gone. She rubbed her crusted eyes as she curled into a sitting position. For the first time in months, she felt energized and rested.
Her bed ended where the kitchen area began. Marcus stood in front of the wood-burning stove, his back facing her. Even with his neck bent and spine curved, his blond head grazed the low ceiling. He wrapped a thick cloth around his hand, lifted the cast-iron skillet, and turned in place. He plunked it down on the circular stone tray at the center of her small rickety table. Her first and only attempt at carpentry creaked but didn’t fall apart.
She lifted an eyebrow as she scrutinized the skillet’s contents—seared smoked venison covered with slices of dried apple. It was an interesting meal choice.
Perhaps in reaction to her quizzical expression, he turned his palms up and defended his creation. “The food store in your basement is a mess. This was all I could scrounge up.”
She frowned. “I packed and stacked everything in alphabetical order.”
His broad shoulders rose and fell. “Your system didn’t make any sense. You’ll have to explain it sometime. Either way, this beats the MREs I fed you during the snowstorm. Come on. Your breakfast is getting cold.”
She grabbed the worn quilt and wrapped it over her shoulders. She was about to lower her feet to the cold floor when she saw him shake his head.
He walked over to the foot of her bed. The length of his torso and arms easily spanned the small area separating the cottage’s sleeping and eating spaces. He leaned forward and grabbed the edge of the table with both hands. When he brought his elbows into his body, the piece of furniture with all its contents slid as if on wheels. It stopped a few inches away from the bottom edge of the mattress. He stepped around it, then pulled up the only chair, and sat.
Scooting over, she sniffed the food. The smell made her mouth water. “Why are you being so nice?”
“I’ve always been nice.” He used his knife to spear a piece of seared meat and raised it to his mouth.
Scooting over, she sniffed the food. “You only did it to get me to have sex with you.”
